situation and what it implied. I closed the office later and drove down to the former Bristol Motor Lodge on Metacom Avenue. As nervous as I was, as I entered the bar, the glass door was so clean that I walked right through it, shattering the door. The bartender actually laughed and said, "I don't remember anyone breaking the door on the way in. That usually happens on the way out.” I tried to relax over a cocktail, thinking about what my competitors were doing to ruin my reputation. The IRS sent letters to all of my clients which included questionnaires regarding how I prepared their taxes. Naturally, they would call me to ask what I had done wrong and to explain that they had to lose a day of work to go to the IRS Office in Providence for questioning. I told them I had done nothing wrong and that they should simply tell them the truth. I also told them that I was facing accusations from my competitors who were upset that their clients were now coming to me. The investigation lasted nine months, from April until three days before Christmas, at which point I received a letter from the IRS apologizing for the inconvenience. They had found nothing wrong with the returns I filed. A fine Christmas present, if you ask me. After eight months of this ordeal, I finally regained some peace of mind. Of course, I lost some clients the following year, but I also gained others and continued my business without interruption for more than 35 years. Bristol Sports Club In 1974, I was elected President of the General Assembly of the Bristol Soccer Club. I was president for 15 years. I had continued to meet many people, and, by that point, I had become very popular within the Bristol community. I was named "Bristol Sports Man of the Year" in 1983. This was one of the most successful soccer clubs in the United States. Back then, Americans did not pay much attention to the king of all sports. During my tenure, this Portuguese-American club won many championships: New England Champions in 1973-1974; Luso-American Soccer 99
Association Champions in 1974-1975; 1977-1978; and 1981; The League Anniversary Trophy in 1975-1976-1977. "The Portuguese Times" Trophy in 1976-1977. I am very proud that a town of only twenty-three thousand people was able to attain such a fantastic record, especially since all the players were non-professional. The only compensation they received was a bonus given to them by the membership along with post-game dinner parties. The building that houses the Club was purchased by the membership. Many members worked for free to remodel the Club House to be what it is today. Many functions were held throughout the Club's history. "Man of the Year” awards were given to so many people who not only donated money, but who also worked countless hours for the love of the sport. Many politicians and dignitaries - both Portuguese and American - have been honored by the club over the years for their assistance and help with this non-profit organization. Today, soccer is becoming more and more popular in the United States, in large part due to the many volunteers who are engaged in the Youth Soccer League. There is now a professional soccer league in America called the MLS, and it is comprised of many teams all over the country. Soccer in the USA has evolved tremendously in the last few years and is now able to compete with many European teams on an international scale, particularly the United States Women's Soccer Team, which has been a world champion several times over. The Whole Family Became American Citizens In 1973, five years after we arrived in the United States as immigrants, my entire family applied to become American citizens. It was always my goal from the beginning. I loved and admired so many things about this country - its freedom of speech and expression, the opportunities to find success, the education provided to their children -- the American Dream. 100
