Setúbal tremendously. While I was at Setúbal, I received the news
from my friends in the Azores that all my colleagues from the
training center (who got their first choice assignment to be
stationed in the Azores) had been mobilized to India where a
problem had erupted in the Portuguese colonies. Apparently,
Prime Minister Neru decided to invade, and most of my colleagues
had to spend three additional years in Gôa, Damão, and Diu, the
three territories that had been occupied by the Portuguese since

I was so lucky! My punishment and the lowering of my grade
worked out very well for me. I was not sent to India. I danced
with the commander’s girlfriend all night in Spain and I avoided
spending additional time in the service.
In Setúbal, I was an instructor of recruits in one of the more
interesting areas of continental Portugal. My duties consisted of
having breakfast with the recruits in the morning and giving them
