a nice dinner at a seafood restaurant in Sausalito, a charming town
on the other side. We like to follow the rugged, scenic California
Coastal Highway 1 – sculpted by earthquakes, wind and ocean to
the stunningly beautiful Monterey Peninsula, which has been
called the greatest meeting of land, sea and sky. We continue to
drive and see the vistas and wild life along the scenic 17 Mile
Drive and visit the lovely coastal town of Carmel-By-The-Sea,
where actor Clint Eastwood was once the Mayor.
We continue to drive down Route 1A south, by California’s scenic
coast, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Along the way we make
several stops, stay at motels and visit many charming cities and
towns like San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura, ending
up in Los Angeles, where we spend a few days to visit that huge
city, take a tour to Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, to see the
movie stars’ mansions. We also take a tour of Hollywood and visit
the studios and sites where films are produced. The trip from San
Francisco to Los Angeles is approximately 350 miles long. It is, in
my opinion, the most interesting way to explore California.
A two hour drive from Los Angeles brings you to the beautiful city
of San Diego, where the average temperature is 70 degrees
Fahrenheit. It is perhaps the best climate in the United States all
year round. The beautiful white beaches are more that a boundary
dividing land and sea. In San Diego, the beach is a way of life. The
city was the host for the America’s Cup that had been held in our
city of Newport, Rhode Island for many years, until the U.S. lost to
New Zeeland and later to San Diego. It is wonderful to visit Balboa
Park; University Heights and Hillcrest; La Jolla and Del Mar.
We also explore the beauty of the Hotel Coronado that radiates
with a confidence of gracious Victorian splendor that is without
equal. It was built in 1888; a classic beachfront property that has
long been heralded as one of America’s most beautiful resorts, also
