Australia OCEANIA One of the longest trips we have ever made was to Australia. We departed from Boston to Los Angeles, which took us 6 hours, then took a flight to Sydney that took 14 hours (non-stop) and finally a 4-hour flight to Cairns, in the northern of Australia. By crossing the international Dateline en route, we skipped a day. It was very tiresome, but well worth it. We took an exciting excursion in Cairns on a high speed catamaran to the Great Barrier Reef that is famous all over the world for its amazingly diverse marine life. We had a chance to watch Aboriginal dancers and learn about their life style. In the evening we had the privilege to look up in the sky and see the unforgettable Southern Hemisphere’s stars. What a spectacle! We also took a tour to see crocodiles in their natural habitat, during our visit to the Hartley Croc Farm. The next day we visited the rainforests and woodlands to observe wild birds, reptiles and the local koalas. Then, very early in the morning, we went to a farm and took a balloon ride, something that I had always dreamed of doing. From the balloons, we could see beautiful farm houses, surrounded by green pastures and hundreds of kangaroos running in the wild. What a wonderful morning experience, seeing the sun rise before our eyes. We flew to Melbourne and visited the Fitzroy Gardens, the Shrine of Remembrances and the Parliament House. We took a special trip to Philips Island to see the world’s largest colony of Little Penguins. The highlight was to see the adorable Little Penguins Parade that occurs at dusk when hundreds of lovable birds waddle 205
out of the sea and cross the beach to their burrows in the dunes. They usually go to sea in the morning, in groups, to search for food and return in the early evening. The interesting thing is that if one of the penguins is missing from the group, the entire family returns to the water and do not return to shore until they find the missing one. The march began on a patch of sand not too far away when we glimpsed a pair of wobbly feet. We saw the bird, a little penguin, a fairy penguin, followed by another on the shore, and then another, and another, and soon the beach was alive, full of these beautiful creatures. It was fascinating! The next morning we went by bus to Australia’s capital city, Canberra. We enjoyed a panoramic city tour, visiting the Old Parliament House and the National Museum of Australia, which interactively celebrates the land, nation and people of the country. The next morning, we took the bus through the Blue Mountains, arriving in the bustling city of Sydney. As usual, we took a tour of the city to see Kings Cross, the world renown Harbour Bridge, China Town, where we purchased a few cherimoyers, my favorite fruit, at an outside market. We passed by the Circular Quay and the fashionable suburb of Paddington. Naturally, we had to visit the world’s most acoustically perfect architectural design, the Sydney Opera House, the most recognizable landmark of Australia. In the evening we took a cruise on the harbor and the tour guide pointed out the famous Australian movie star, Nicole Kidman’s home. New Zealand We left Australia on a flight to the city of Christchurch the charming gateway to New Zealand’s South Island. We walked through cobblestone streets of the most English city outside England, with countless cafes and boutiques. The tour included a private dinner hosted by a local family. It was delightful to meet 206
