Europe’s oldest pharmacy lies along with the Rector’s Palace and
the City Walls. What a wonderful experience.
The next day we travelled to Medjugojre, a small town of only a
few houses. Our group climbed up a small mountain. It was raining
very hard and when we got to the top of the hill, we could see the
Blue Cross, at the base of the Apparition Hill, where our Lady
Virgin Mary, supposedly appeared to several children. Looking
down the valley, we could see a large church in the middle of the
village. A fellow travel agent came to us and said, “Why did I
climb this hill, under the rain, if I am not even a Christian? I am
Jewish, but I felt something pushing me?” We found his
testimonial very shocking and extraordinary! When we came down
the hill, we looked for the homes of the visionaries. Our guide had
told us that sometimes they came out of their homes. Luckily, we
found the house of Marija Pavlovic. We waited for a little while
and she appeared on the balcony of her house and said some words
in Yugoslavian and led the crowd in the Rosary. We were
extremely touched.
After that incredible moment of meeting one of the visionaries, we
walked to the church where we observed many pilgrims and many
priests hearing confessions. My wife and I went for confession and
I asked the priest why there was such a large church in the middle
of such a small village with only a few families. He replied,
“Nobody knows. The church had been built many years before.”
Our group travelled north through Yugoslavia, passing by the
Plitvice National Park and experienced the wonder of sixteen
cascading lakes, where we spent the night. The next morning, we
travelled to Zagreb, a large beautiful city and visited the majestic
cathedral, St. Mark’s Church and the Opera House.
