Las Vegas - The largest and most visited entertainment and gambling city in the world. It is the city of light, where at midnight it looks as if it were noon. The hotels are super deluxe and the casinos and shows are the very best. You don’t have to be a gambler to enjoy Las Vegas. My wife and I have visited the city several times and we usually stay at one of the hotels on the strip. We walk from hotel to hotel, watch the events and entertainment and spend a maximum of two hundred dollars on slot machines. Las Vegas is a city of fun. There is even entertainment for children. It’s a fascinating city that is constantly changing, where hotels are demolished and replaced by new ones built with state-of-the-art architecture and all kinds of amenities. It is a formidable experience! Our travel agency used to sell three- and four-night packages for as little as four hundred dollars a person, including flights, hotels and transfers from the airport. It is a destination where you don’t have to spend a lot of money, unless you are a gambler. We have had the opportunity to see show performances with famous stars, including Bob Hope, Doris Day, Cher, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Frank Sinatra and many others. What a thrill to see so many world celebrities. I remember that in the seventies I took a group to Las Vegas. My mother heard that Dean Martin was going to perform that week, so I invited her to come along. She was so happy. When she returned home she liked to brag to her friends that she had seen her favorite singer in person! Unfortunately, she passed away on December 20, 2005. May God bless her soul! She was a very special lady and mother. California – One of my favorite places to visit is the San Francisco Bay area. I rent a car and drive through that beautiful region and visit San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and other smaller cities around. We usually drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and have 225
a nice dinner at a seafood restaurant in Sausalito, a charming town on the other side. We like to follow the rugged, scenic California Coastal Highway 1 – sculpted by earthquakes, wind and ocean to the stunningly beautiful Monterey Peninsula, which has been called the greatest meeting of land, sea and sky. We continue to drive and see the vistas and wild life along the scenic 17 Mile Drive and visit the lovely coastal town of Carmel-By-The-Sea, where actor Clint Eastwood was once the Mayor. We continue to drive down Route 1A south, by California’s scenic coast, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Along the way we make several stops, stay at motels and visit many charming cities and towns like San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura, ending up in Los Angeles, where we spend a few days to visit that huge city, take a tour to Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, to see the movie stars’ mansions. We also take a tour of Hollywood and visit the studios and sites where films are produced. The trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles is approximately 350 miles long. It is, in my opinion, the most interesting way to explore California. A two hour drive from Los Angeles brings you to the beautiful city of San Diego, where the average temperature is 70 degrees Fahrenheit. It is perhaps the best climate in the United States all year round. The beautiful white beaches are more that a boundary dividing land and sea. In San Diego, the beach is a way of life. The city was the host for the America’s Cup that had been held in our city of Newport, Rhode Island for many years, until the U.S. lost to New Zeeland and later to San Diego. It is wonderful to visit Balboa Park; University Heights and Hillcrest; La Jolla and Del Mar. We also explore the beauty of the Hotel Coronado that radiates with a confidence of gracious Victorian splendor that is without equal. It was built in 1888; a classic beachfront property that has long been heralded as one of America’s most beautiful resorts, also 226
