Chicago on my way home, because I could not stand the living and
social injustices I witnessed with my own eyes.
I hope and pray to God, that in spite of the terrible catastrophe, the
US and other countries will not only rebuild Port-au-Prince, but
help to establish a plan to install factories and other infrastructure
to give employment to the human beings who want and need to
work to become independent, instead of receiving hand outs of
food and other necessities. I strongly think that former President
Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, former President Jimmy Carter and other
Foundations can convince the G8 countries to do just that, instead
of moving their companies to China. It’s inconceivable that in the
21 st century we have a neighboring nation within the American
Continent that is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere!
Panama Canal
CENTRAL AMERICA
We took a cruise to cross the Panama Canal, which is a 48-mile
ship canal that joins the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It is one of
the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken.
It was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial
World. The canal had an enormous impact on shipping between the
two oceans, replacing the long treacherous route via the Drake
Passage and Cape Horn at the southernmost tip of South America.
A ship from San Francisco traveling via the canal travels 5,900
miles, which is well under half the 14,000-mile route around Cape
Horn. It was a great experience going through the canal to watch
the locks that determine the maximum of ships allowed passage
and how narrow a space the ships had to maneuver. What a
fantastic spectacle.
