THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI Combative Weapons Q & A (Part 5) by Shihan Danna Abbott The Japanese Art of Chanbara Promises Safe Sparring for All Martial Artists Q: Is sparring composed of mostly offense, or is there also a lot of defense? It is very difficult to block a weapon. Therefore, it is best to get out of the way and not get hit at all. Just imagine getting hit in a head on collision by a car when you are in a big truck. No matter how safe the bigger vehicle is you will be put into difficulty. If one has a very strong offensive technique all opponents will have to evade. Here in the United States many schools teach an abundance of blocking and counters which takes twice as much time to move correctly. With weaponry especially, the sword all combatants are taught to come in hard and fast. ( A smoker down the middle like a fast 100 mile an hour pitch in baseball). In chanbara we also teach blocking, but in many cases it is easier and wiser to evade the strike and keep from getting hit. Q: What are some common mistakes? Know you’re body and its abilities and limitations. For example: If you do not have a weapon in hand most all hand and foot technique will not help the average martial artist. One has to be very very good to disarm a qualified swordsman without his own sword. Other common mistakes are allowing your legs to telegraph your intended movements. In the art of the sword it’s your feet that get you to the battle and your stride, feet, legs, hips etc. even your toes can show your weak spots. That is why most all swordsmen in Japan wear hakama.(that type of Japanese skirt one wears in kendo) Q: What are effective combinations? Most all combinations are effective at one point or another. There are hundreds of combinations. Therefore, one must also practice at least a dozen combinations to perfection in order to put your advisory into difficulty. Fakes work well with beginners and sometimes they work on advanced combatants, but only one time! After that there is not a second chance for making a point with a proficient swords person or chanbara man. Otherwise it basically wastes time and one loses strength and energy in “the spirit of the thing”. Striking high and then low always keeps them guessing. This also allows the swordsman to take advantage of the whole body. Just as in tennis and or many other sports go from a long to a short shot, or left to right. That way an opening will occur and you can go in for the strike. Moreover, it is easier and one telegraphs less when you are working with gravity instead of against it. Always work your shot downward since an upward shot usually does not have the speed, strength and stealth required for a good score or kill depending what era you grew up in. Q: Any basic strategies? Yes, the basic 5 strokes honed to perfection allow all to fight well. Always keep the sword in front and keep a basic stance posture. And never, ever do fancy stuff you see on TV because it will put you into difficulty. SHIHAN DANA ABBOTT Is a 7th degree black belt in Kenjutsu, starting his 14-year education in Tokyo.
