Steps to Success<br />

Your Face, Body, and School Must look Referable<br />

They need to Love your Program, Like you, and Be Impressed<br />

with your school.<br />

1. Correct anything that you feel is wrong with you.<br />

Teeth, overweight, etc.<br />

2. Always dress in uniform or dress clothes<br />

with polished dress shoes. Dress neatly all the<br />

time, clean, and pressed.<br />

3. Limit jewelry to a watch, wedding<br />

rings and professional ring, or a<br />

college ring.<br />

4. No earrings for<br />

men, conservative earrings<br />

for women.<br />

5. Fingernails should<br />

be clean, trimmed, rounded, and<br />

one neutral color.<br />

6. Glasses should be small<br />

lenses, contact lenses, or better<br />

yet, get your eyes fixed.<br />

7. Look like you are in shape.<br />

8. No facial hair. Keep your eyebrows trimmed. Ladies<br />

use natural color makeup, less is better.<br />

9. Dental hygiene. Keep your breath fresh. No chewing<br />

gum. Braces if necessary.<br />

10. Hair should not be over your collar and look<br />

like you just got a haircut. No shaved heads. Conservative<br />

haircuts. Women’s hair should be pulled<br />

back off face.<br />

11. A new uniform with a new belt looks more<br />

professional to the general public.<br />

12. Shoes should look new. Never<br />

wear worn or dirty looking shoes of<br />

any type.<br />

13. No baggy pants or tight fitting<br />

leotards for women.<br />

14. Cell phones should not be worn on your<br />

belt, it looks unprofessional. Don’t wear an earpiece,<br />

it looks amateur.<br />

GRANDMASTER LAWRENCE ARTHUR has been a martial artist, specializing<br />

in Karate, Kung Fu, Kenpo, Shotokan, and Goju Ryu, since 1968. He owns 40 Super Kick Karate<br />

locations and is founder of the American Freestyle Karate Association (AFKA). A world champion<br />

and hall of famer, Lawrence also runs the Black Belt Success Systems consulting firm, which trains<br />

martial arts instructors on proper business practices and is used by schools all over the country.<br />
