Course summary: The developmental disabilities <strong>and</strong> rehabilitation fields have lagged behind other areas of biomedical research . As a result, practice is often based<br />

on experience, tradition, case-report, intuition, <strong>and</strong> assumption rather than scientifically derived evidence . Enhancing Rehabilitation Research in the South (ERRIS)<br />

was established at the University of Virginia to increase the quality <strong>and</strong> quantity of research through annual intensive grant writing workshops .<br />

In this instructional course, four of the faculty from the ERRIS Workshop will present interactive discussions of ) Grantsmanship Secrets 2) Collaboration – a Necessity<br />

in Rehabilitation Research 3) Principles of Grant Writing 4) Steps to Completing, Submitting, <strong>and</strong> Receiving Funding .<br />

The content will cover how to get started, seeking <strong>and</strong> responding to critiques, ten steps to successful collaboration, writing a <strong>for</strong>ceful abstract, clarity of presentation,<br />

overcoming writer’s block, problems <strong>and</strong> solutions in final submission . We expect that participation in this course will greatly enhance success in obtaining grants .<br />

The reception will begin at 6:00 PM in the concourse outside of Exhibit Hall A . Promptly at 7:00 PM, the doors to the exhibit hall will open <strong>for</strong><br />

Special guest speakers include Mr . Duncan Wyeth <strong>and</strong> Susan Harris, PhD with her lecture titled “Challenging Myths in Health Care: The Story of<br />

Abreast in a Boat” . The Duncan Wyeth Award will be presented at this time .<br />

Come join the International Affairs Committee <strong>for</strong> an in<strong>for</strong>mative program <strong>and</strong> lunch . The program will consist of an international panel who<br />

will discuss the state of pediatric rehabilitation in their country, how they started their programs, what the most challenging issues were <strong>and</strong> how<br />

they solved them . There will also be a guest presentation by Jules Becher, MD . This is a good opportunity to meet <strong>and</strong> exchange in<strong>for</strong>mation with<br />

professionals from around the world . Cost is $50 USD .<br />

1:00 - 3:00 PM Family Forum<br />

This special session is an opportunity <strong>for</strong> local-area parents <strong>and</strong> children with cerebral palsy <strong>and</strong> other developmental disabilities to meet with<br />

the experts in the field in order to learn about the progress that is being made in research . This session is organized by the local host, Maureen<br />

O’Donnell, MD, Carolyn Chowne, RN <strong>and</strong> Bob Armstrong, MD, in association with local groups representing families <strong>and</strong> caretakers . Presentations<br />

on sports related topics will be given by Nancy Murphy, MD <strong>and</strong> Hal Honeyman .
