<strong>June</strong> 25th, 1876<br />
• Near the Little Bighorn River in Montana General George A.<br />
Custer attacked a Sioux encampment. This led to a Sioux retaliation<br />
and of Custer’s 250 men, only a scout and a single horse survived.<br />
The defeat incited Americans and led to a war between American<br />
troops and the Sioux Indians.<br />
<strong>June</strong> 26th, 1945<br />
• The United Nations Charter was<br />
signed by 50 nations in San Francisco<br />
following the surrender of Germany in<br />
the European theatre of World War II.<br />
<strong>June</strong> 28th, 1914 and 1919<br />
• Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the<br />
Austro-Hungarian Empire was murdered<br />
in Sarajevo by Serbian nationalists. This<br />
led to a chain of events culminating in the<br />
First World War which was, at the time, the<br />
deadliest conflict the world had ever seen.<br />
• Five years after the Archduke’s assassination,<br />
the Treaty of Versailles formally ended the First<br />
World War. Responsibility for the war was put on<br />
Germany’s shoulders and they were forced to pay<br />
reparations and give up significant territory. The<br />
harsh terms of the peace contributed to the rise<br />
of Nazism in Germany and the outbreak of the<br />
Second World War 20 years later.<br />

<strong>June</strong> 30th, 1950 and 1971<br />
• United States ground forces land in Korea following the invasion<br />
of North Korean troops across the 38th parallel. The war would last<br />
three years until an armistice was signed that split the countries<br />
along the 38th parallel.<br />
• The 26th Amendment to the Constitution was enacted, which<br />
lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. The change meant that the<br />
United States gained 11 million new voters.<br />
