June 25th, 1876
• Near the Little Bighorn River in Montana General George A.
Custer attacked a Sioux encampment. This led to a Sioux retaliation
and of Custer’s 250 men, only a scout and a single horse survived.
The defeat incited Americans and led to a war between American
troops and the Sioux Indians.
June 26th, 1945
• The United Nations Charter was
signed by 50 nations in San Francisco
following the surrender of Germany in
the European theatre of World War II.
June 28th, 1914 and 1919
• Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire was murdered
in Sarajevo by Serbian nationalists. This
led to a chain of events culminating in the
First World War which was, at the time, the
deadliest conflict the world had ever seen.
• Five years after the Archduke’s assassination,
the Treaty of Versailles formally ended the First
World War. Responsibility for the war was put on
Germany’s shoulders and they were forced to pay
reparations and give up significant territory. The
harsh terms of the peace contributed to the rise
of Nazism in Germany and the outbreak of the
Second World War 20 years later.

June 30th, 1950 and 1971
• United States ground forces land in Korea following the invasion
of North Korean troops across the 38th parallel. The war would last
three years until an armistice was signed that split the countries
along the 38th parallel.
• The 26th Amendment to the Constitution was enacted, which
lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. The change meant that the
United States gained 11 million new voters.
