His interest in architecture led to award winning work in the hospitality design industry in Alberta. He worked briefly in California before moving to Ontario and eventually creating his own agency, combining his love of architecture and illustration to create architectural renderings and design. He did that for more than 25 years. “I think every commercial artist has a fine artist in him screaming to get out,” Michael commented, and he began to create landscaped including works of historic homes, nature and streetscapes in Southern Ontario. Well, invades may be too strong a term, but six members of Redneck Country (www.theredneckcountry.com) attended the Blenheim Cherry Festival with gusto and enthusiasm. This all transpired because of the “Biggest Little Paper in Canada,” DAYTRIPPING. Our name comes from a company my son Todd started called Redneck Country, based on old school country values and morals. Before I explain how, let me fill you in “Gone with the Wind 3” on my use of this publication. For years now I have been a reader of Daytripping and we live close to many places listed in this paper. We live in St. Thomas, 20 minutes from Port Stanley and often visit Mackie’s for a meal and stop at Shaw’s for ice cream on the way home. In fact, my wife Glenda and I, her sister Trudy and their cousin Sandy are planning to go to Mackie’s for supper tonight. We also make sure to get tickets each year to the various plays and shows at the Port Stanley Festival Theatre. I also own a 1923 Ford T Bucket hot rod with a blown 350 small block chevy and have located many car shows in this paper. So how did we get to attend the Blenheim Cherry Festival? Usually my wife Glenda, Todd and his wife Jennifer, their daughters, 15 year old Megan and nine year old Avery go on vacation together, and I use this paper to locate interesting stops along the way. This year, however, no major trip was planned, just daytrips. I picked up the summer issue of Daytripping in the New Sarum Diner – my wife and I have been regulars to this restaurant since we met in high school – and the first ad that caught my eye was for the Blenheim Cherry Festival. We all found ourselves with a week off and when I cut the ad out and showed it to my oldest granddaughter, she told me and her family, “We are so going to this.” We had such a great daytrip that I was compelled to write to the paper for the first time ever. On a Friday morning in July, 2022 we made our first stop at Tim Horton’s and we were off. All the way along Highway #3 we passed familiar landmarks, as this was a major vacation route when I was a kid and early in my marriage. We parked at the festival before noon and the midway was in full swing. The two-block long party was filled with outside shopping, food booths and other venues, including carnival games and rides. Megan with her 15 year old wisdom suggested that we walk the whole length of the festival first to take in everything and decide what we do or visit first. At the end of the two block stroll we noticed a shop named “Lasting Memories” displaying a sign that read 50% off everything and no sales tax. Both the 15 year old and the 9 year old said in unison, “We shop first, then do rides.” This shop was bigger inside than it looked and was worth shopping at. The next store that we entered was “Antiquated Joys” where Megan found a wide-brimmed white hat that she also wore for the rest of the day. Todd and I both found a sport coat on a rack outside a men’s store that was 50% off that we both liked. Unfortunately, they did not have one in my size, but Todd bought one in his size that he said was just perfect to wear to the office. The next store we entered was “Treasures on Talbot” and from there we continued shopping all the way back to where we parked, having picked up items for ourselves and future birthday presents. We passed a booth selling cherry pies and I told my wife that we should buy a pie now as they may run out. She said that she had inquired and was told that they had baked 500 cherry pies for the three-day festival. It was now close to 2p.m. and we decided to have lunch at Jack’s Family Restaurant. I had the soup and sandwich and drink special for $10.49. The soup was cream of chicken and the sandwich that I chose was turkey salad and I think it was the best turkey salad sandwich that I ever had. Todd had the captain burger and couldn’t quite finish it all. Now it was time to ride. With the rides costing $6 and $8 each, it was a no brainer to purchase the $25 wrist band of unlimited rides for the whole day for the two girls. We left the Blenheim Cherry Festival at 5:30 p.m. and that daytrip got a huge thumbs up from everyone. Oh yeah, about that cherry pie... my wife went to get a pie to put in the car after lunch and discovered that the entire 500 pies baked for the three days were already sold out. Next year the pie booth will be our first stop. The 2023 Blenheim Cherry Festival will take place from July 13 to 15. Page 10 Wheatley is the world’s largest freshwater fishing port.
