Frances’ Helpful Hints
by Frances Botham
1) Have a sickly stained vase or bottle and don’t know
what to do? Give it an Alka Seltzer! That’s right! Fill
with water and drop in an Alka Seltzer and let stand for
24 hours. Then brush, wash and rinse thoroughly. Dry and the stain
should be gone. This usually works quite well. If not, what can I say,
but throw out the vase or bottle.
2) Don’t do this! Don’t do that! Well here are some more “don’t”
mentions. Don’t wash ivory. Don’t repaint old toys. Don’t tape old
paper. Don’t wash oil paintings. Don’t buff pewter. Just don’t do it!
3) How to clean Lacquer? Truly a dilemma but never fear because help
is on the way. Make a paste of flour and olive oil. Use clean flannel
cloth to polish the item with this concoction and the result is a clean
gleaming finish. Tasting the paste is not recommended.
4) Good old baking soda is still out there working like a trojan. Use
baking soda and water to give graniteware and other enameled ware a
gleaming finish. Truly amazing stuff!
5) To wax or not to wax? That is the question. If you like to wax your
furniture, remember that it is safe to put paste wax over spray wax, but
not a good idea to apply spray over paste wax. It could soften the wax
and ruin the finish. So, don’t spray the paste!
6) Here’s a little quiz. I’ve got it, no, I had it, no, I threw it out. What
are the most despised, the most hated expressions of all times for all
antique dealers? By George, you’ve got it!
