Sisters’
Daytrip
By Kym Wolfe • www.kymwolfe.com
My sister and I live in the same city,
but we don’t carve out time for just the
two of us as often as we’d like. A few
years ago we enjoyed our first sisters’
road trip, and now it’s become an annual
summer tradition.
Usually it’s a one-day outing—we set
out in the morning with a destination in
mind, meandering on country roads and
sometimes stopping along the way. This
would typically be for something that she
(the photographer) can capture with her
camera, or that I (the craft beer and wine
lover) can entice her to sample with me.
Or for something unusual that piques our
interest.
One year our destination was Cowbell
Brewery in Blyth. We stopped in Clinton
to see the now side-tracked railway car
that for many years served as a mobile
one-room school and living quarters for
teacher Fred Sloman, his wife Cela and
their family. Talk about tiny living—they
raised five children on it!
Being raised in Northern Ontario
my sister and I were familiar with the
concept of a one-room school house.
When we were toddlers our father taught
in a one-room classroom in Kenabeek—a
building that Wikipedia tells me is still
standing 60 years later, serving as the
town’s community centre.
Naturally, we were fascinated with the
Clinton railway school car, which for 39
years ran between Capreol and Foleyet.
Up and down the line it went, 240 km
each way, throughout the school year.
Get Paid to Go ...
The car was shunted to a side track at
different points for a week at a time, so
that Mr. Sloman could teach the children
in that area.
Pictures and stories of the students
brought the past to life—Indigenous
children who snowshoed to the train once
a month, dodging the residential school
they may have ended up in; children of
newcomers to Canada who worked for
the railroad and knew no English; children
of woodsmen, hunters, trappers, some of
them canoeing or skiing for miles to get
to school each day when the train school
came to their community.
Alton Farms Estate Winery
Last year our sisters’ daytrip took us to
Alton Farms Estate Winery in Plympton-
Wyoming. We told our families we were
going to Wyoming for the day—almost
as impressive as Paris or Brussels, which
are also within our one-day driving
range! Dedicated shun-pikers, we drove
through the countryside, pulling over to
see fields of sunflowers and to wave at
the alpacas who live on the same farm.
When we arrived at Alton we started
our visit by exploring the hiking trails
adjacent to the vineyard. Afterwards we
enjoyed a glass of wine and charcuterie
board on the patio, and a pleasant
conversation with owner Anne Kurtz
Alton. The winery is just one destination
on Lambton County’s Blue Coast Trail,
and she left us with a map that revealed
an abundance of wineries, breweries and
cideries in the area. I sense a future road
trip back to the area.
Conveniently, Stonepicker Brewing
Company is right around the country
corner from Alton—and they had
beautiful sunflower fields! A flight of
beer in Stonepicker’s picturesque setting
satisfied both the photographer and
the craft beer afficionado, and was the
perfect ending for our very pleasant day.
Daytripping is hiring drivers to deliver the paper to
unique shops, one or two days, a few times a year.
We need friendly, mature people with a minivan or
truck, who can easily lift the bundles of papers. CALL 1-800-667-0337
