Mid-September 2022, while walking
through my backyard I saw three
perfectly ripe cherry tomatoes on the
grass, which left me puzzled, as I do not
have any tomato plants. Since I have
squirrels scampering in the yard all day
long, I thought they must be stealing
them from one of the neighbours, then
leaving them here. Then I wondered,
do squirrels even eat cherry tomatoes? If
so, then why were they just left behind?
Another thought came to mind. If the
squirrels were responsible for this, would
there not be teeth marks on them? The
little tomatoes looked so good, but
not knowing where they came from I
dropped them into my composter and
forgot all about it. A few days later, I
saw more ripe cherry tomatoes on the
ground. Being very curious about this,
I questioned some of my neighbours
with tomato plants. Were their tomatoes
disappearing? They did not seem to
think so. Time went on with me finding
cherry tomatoes every few days. I was
at a loss for an explanation to this little
mystery.
A couple weeks later, on a beautiful
autumn afternoon, I went out to sit in
my yard to read. After a while, I put my
head back to look at the cloudless sky.
The leaves on my giant maple tree were
just turning into lovely gold, orange, and
reddish shades. Then I saw what looked
like a greenish clump about 30 feet up in
the tree. Puzzled, I walked over closer to
the tree and was flabbergasted to see a
scrappy looking plant bearing dozens of
cherry tomatoes! This tomato plant was
thriving in a hollow in the tree, where
we had a huge limb removed many
years ago since it leaned dangerously
over the back of our house. Eventually, a
hollow formed where the tree limb was
cut. Somehow, tomato seeds were left
there, (from birds, perhaps?) resulting
in the tomato plant! I would never have
imagined this being possible until I saw
it happening. My neighbour took the
picture when I called her over to have
a look.
I tried doing research on the chances
of a tomato plant growing up in a tree,
but could not find anything. However, I
discovered someone who said he found
a cherry tomato plant growing in a
crevace of the concrete. Someone else
was showing a picture of one growing
in the front stoop of their house.
Obviously, these are tough little plants
that are happy in many strange places.
Since discovering the “mystery”
tomato plant, I now look forward to
finding tomatoes on the grass. I simply
give them a quick wipe then savour
their sweetness. It is soon coming to
an end though, as I see only two ripe
tomatoes left on the plant; and though
there are still green ones left, I know
they won’t get a chance to ripen as we
are soon getting frost. I am hoping to
find another tomato plant growing there
once again next spring—or something
as equally interesting!
