Childhood Memories
of Port Dover
I have fond memories of the times
when my family and I would pile into the
car to go to Port Dover. The drive always
seemed to take forever when I was a kid,
more than enough time for me to get car
sick, but also enough time to sing the Mr.
Sun song with my sister in the backseat,
as we believed our voices had the power
to sing the golden sun through the
clouds. If it was already guaranteed to be
sunny, Dad would put on some old tunes
while he fielded our “are we there yet
questions,” as my mom would worriedly
ask me, “Do you need the puke bowl?”
If we went to the beach on Saturday,
we made a point of going to the Port
Dover Lions Silver Lake Market where
lively accordion music would meet us at
the door. Inside, the market was bursting
with buyers and sellers. Anything from
meats and cheese, to fresh produce
and baked goods. I would always get a
delicious Danish to snack on. My sister
and I would go outside to see the rowers
glide through the water on Silver Lake.
Once arriving at the beach, we fortified
ourselves with a quick snack of crispy,
salty potato chips and decided it was
time for a swim. It didn’t matter how
icy cold the water might have been, my
sister and I were determined to swim as
soon as we could. We always got to the
beach early to get the ‘best’ spot so for
a while we had the water to ourselves.
While my parents set up home for the
day on the soft sand, my sister and
I headed out for the true test of our
strength. If there was even the slightest
bit of waves rolling towards the shore, we
would swim out and begin our escapades
we named ‘wave crashing.’ This involved
waiting for the wave to pick up steam
By Edith James, St. George
and at the perfect moment, we would
throw ourselves into the frigid wave so
it would lift us up and throw us back.
Sometimes my dad would join us for a
swim only after he perfected the perfect
setup of the beach chairs and umbrella.
Mom would coordinate a picnic and take
out her knitting while keeping an eye on
us. After we had a picnic, we would grab
some ice cream and go mini golfing at
Arbortown Mini-golf where more than
once we hit the golf ball over the fence
(our softball batting skills were to blame).
The workers were always very nice when
handing over a new golf ball. Next we
would go to the Port Dover Harbour
Museum which we loved because of
the morse code machine that you could
practise on. After the museum we would
head back out to the water which was
much warmer and busier and play until
it was time to go home.
Not only am I glad that my car sick
days are over, but I am also grateful
that we still go on these trips together.
I never thought about how tired my
parents must have been on those days.
Dad worked all week and Mom worked
night shifts so Port Dover was important
because it was not only an affordable day
out for us, but it was fun for us kids and
relaxing and stress free for my parents.
Better yet, all the swimming tired us out
so we were much quieter on the car ride
home. Nowadays I am not so keen to
go into the cold water but I find a stroll
along the pier to watch the boats and the
relaxing sound of the water as we walk
along the beach just as good. We still go
to Port Dover a few times a year and it is
a family tradition we will have for years
to come.
