What Does Your Daytrip Look Like?
By Sue Griffiths • Stone Home Creatives, St. Marys (aka The Candle Shop)
Whether you are a planner or more of a spontaneous personality, there is no
shortage of adventure to be had in southwestern Ontario.
Here’s a fun way to plan a daytrip on a day’s notice:
1. Grab a Daytripper and pull out the map from the middle.
2. Guesstimate circles out from your home at the 30 minute, one hour and
two hour driving distances, and decide on how far you want to trek.
3. If you are planning, use the Events page and destination ad pages to
help you decide what you might like to do on your outing.
4. If you are winging it, have someone pick a number between 1 and 12
and pretend your circle is a clock—that’s where you are going!
5. Pack up your map and some car snacks and hit the road.
If you are planning, you will need to
call ahead to reserve spots for things
like tickets, tee times, and dinner spots.
For those winging it, head out a bit
earlier and hit an all-day breakfast joint
or coffee shop when you arrive at your
destination. Ask the patrons what the
hidden gems are in their community.
If the answer doesn’t suit your fancy,
ask someone else. Suggest that you like
walking, photography, craft beer, good
food, creativity and art, antiques, you
get the idea.
Locals are great ambassadors. So are
retail shop owners. I’m a shop owner
who directs visitors to all the great
unknowns along with the must visit
specialty shops in our cool downtown.
I’m a true believer in letting the day
unfold.
If you happen to land in St. Marys,
bring your appetite, some comfy
shoes and a carry bag. You’ll need the
full day, so start early. Grab an egg
over easy when you get here, then
ask where one might find the candle
shop. You may want a candle, but
you will want a list of things to do
that will fill your day and make for some
great memories.
I think the same could be said for
many of the little towns in Ontario. I
often hear comments from visitors that
the vibe in smaller local communities
even 30 minutes from their home is
drastically different, in a good way.
And after the last couple of years, it’s
so great to see you again!
Happy travels!
Publisher’s Note: Great ideas! All I can
suggest is to stay the night and do
it all over again.
