My Sister’s Birthdays
By Paula Eyles, Hamilton
My sister’s birthday is July 20. Since
school was out for the summer, I never
remember her having a ‘normal kids
birthday party.’ To make things worse,
the ‘kids on the street’ were usually gone
because most of the factories, where
our fathers worked, went on annual
‘shutdown’ so everyone headed to their
cottages, camping or grandmothers’
leaving the neighbourhood empty.
As a result, depending on your point
of view, my sister had the best or worst
birthdays each year. Most often, our
family went camping. On the morning
of Kathy’s birthday, our parents would
send us to the blueberry patch to pick
fresh blueberries which always ripened
in late July. Mom would make blueberry
pancakes for supper and put a candle
in my sister’s stack as we sang happy
birthday to her at the picnic table.
One year, my mom read about a
new amusement park opening called
Fantasy Island and you could eat in the
Big Birthday Cake there. So off we went
on a road trip on July 20th and arrived at
a very dusty parking lot and proceeded
to take our picnic lunch to the Birthday
Cake. We were all spread out with paper
official came to kick us out as we had not
reserved the place for our party. As the
four children, we were so embarrassed
when the official came that we took off
to look at the rides leaving my parents
there to clean up and pack the car.
On our way home, we stopped at
Brock’s Monument at Queenston Heights
on the Niagara River. Once again, Mom
and Dad set the picnic table and opened
a cookie tin to reveal a beautiful homemade
birthday cake with candles for
Kathy. We all sang Happy Birthday
and ran around eating our cake while
playing in the park. My parents smiled,
held hands, and kissed—not phased
at all by our Birthday Cake fiasco at
Fantasy Island.
Each year, on July 20th no matter
what we have planned for Kathy’s
birthday, we enjoy reminiscing about
her past birthdays and laugh a lot. When
talking to my sister before planning this
year’s celebration, she told me that she
loved every one of her birthdays. This
year we are going to an Elvis Festival—
she loves Elvis!
