I need to express how this little paper is amazing. My husband and I have been on a lot of trips because of Daytripping, and we have brought along a few friends and family members on a few of them. The first time I laid eyes on this paper, I used the little unique stores as our stops along the way on a few holiday trips we did while in our RV. We have been to so many places just to name a few. Colasanti’s in Kingsville, Local Motif in Sarnia, The Olde Post Office Shoppe in Petrolia, Williamson Farms Country Store in Forest, The Windmill Country Market in Mount Pleasant, Coyle’s Country Store in Tillsonburg, Clovermead Apiaries in Alymer and to Pelee Island Winery. The list can go on and on but this gives you an idea of some of our travels. We have also discovered a few antique malls as well in London, Woodstock, Tillsonburg and Waterford, just to name a few. I keep watching for when the next paper comes out to see what new places we can explore. This is afantastic magazine to enjoy all that our own backyard has to offer. I am original from Wallaceburg, Ontario and waiting for the next issue is like waiting for Wambo (our annual antique car show, held on the second weekend in August) every year. I know I can see it online, but it's not the same as flipping the pages. I do have to tell you that a couple of years ago your little paper did go for a long trip. My husband and I drove to British Columbia taking the Canadian side and back, and this little paper came too. I forgot to take pictures of the paper along the way, but it did enjoy the ride lol. You all are doing such a great job with this paper and we will continue with our day or week long trips with little unique stops along the way. Thanks to you all and this great paper! Lake Huron MI ONTARIO NY Most of the articles you’ll read in these pages have been written by readers like you. The average woman talks 50 percent more than her husband listens. St. Thomas Elevated Park Quirky little park, high in the sky High above Sunset Drive and Fingal Line/Talbot Hill, sits Canada’s first and only park in the sky—St. Thomas Elevated Park. Built on the old Michigan Central Railroad Kettle Creek Bridge, the park is 92 feet high, 30 feet wide and 850 feet long. The line ceased operations in 1996 and for the following 17 years, the bridge was left untouched, complete with the last train that traveled on it, left sitting on the track.This is when the St. Thomas Elevated Park Project began. Over the next 5 years, a dedicated group of volunteers began the arduous task of clearing the train and the tracks. Their vision for the park was grand. The park should become a part of the Trans Canada Trail. It should be a monumental and sculptural structure, a unique worldwide attraction like the Promenade Plantee in Paris or High Line in New York City. The park officially opened September 2019, and was little more than a gravel path. Since then, volunteers have been hard at work, bringing the park to life. At beginning of the trail, which is accessed via an easily accessible, ascending gravel pathway, there is a scree garden. Along with all the gardens in the park, it was created and is maintained by the St. Thomas and District Horticultural Society. Scree gardens are natural parts of mountainous landscapes, where small rocks and gravel descends the side of a mountain due to freeze-thaw action. 30 Talbot Street, ST. It is home to many plants that survive only in the rain due to the well draining surface. Trees and bushes dot the edges of the trail—maples, purple sand cherry, service berry, iris, and wild phlox, along with several green spaces. On my Sunday morning visit, the songbirds drown out the traffic below. Their contrasting chatter back and forth tells me there are many different species nearby. One of the benefits of being up so high, is that you are above the canopy of surrounding trees. The views are spectacular and there was a gentle breeze during my visit. The smell of a backyard campfire from one of the homes below wafts my way, which seems a little out of place when you’re sitting in the sky. The St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre loaned several art pieces, replicas of the originals, to be placed along the entrance. There are several fun musical structures that delight visitors both young and old. One of them is a set of large metal tubes of varying heights, that can be struck with the accompanying drumstick, making for a very large set of chimes. There are also a handful of whimsical art formations that dot the trail. Many of the sculptures are metal, which provides a visual variance against the sky and surrounding treetops. This park is fun, playful and unusual compared to other parts of the Trans Canada Trail. A park that grew from a bridge that outlived its rail traffic; it is one to watch as it continues to grow. It’s worth a visit to St. Thomas to see this quirky little park, high in the sky. St. Thomas Elevated Park is located at 1 Centre Street in St. Thomas and is not far from another popular attraction, Jumbo the Elephant.
