Hackathon at O-Ringen this summer
– What happens now?
At this summer’s O-Ringen, we held a Hackathon that
aimed to pose questions and spark discussion on
sustainability and orienteering for young people. The
Hackathon played an important part in the work of
Swedish orienteering with regard to sustainability and
was held with help from the Youth 2030 Movement.
VÄLKOMMEN
ATT TRIVAS
HOS OSS
There were a total of 40 participants, of whom 32 were young
people. The decision makers who attended were mostly
representatives from the Swedish Orienteering Federation,
O-Ringen and Bagheera.
Participants worked in small groups of around five, with eight
groups in total. They followed a process that started with understanding
a challenge, then brainstorming solutions, developing
ideas and lastly a visual presentation. There were five challenges:
travel, material, school orienteering, the sport’s (lack of) visibility
and inequality in circumstances.
Are you curious about what we came up with?
– We’re seeing that the ideas coming from the Hackathon and the
summer’s idea workshops (which took place at the Rikslägret camp
in Idre and at the confirmation camps in Sälen and Eksjö) are consistent
with each other. Young people see clear synergies between
transport and material issues and social and ecological sustainability,
but otherwise we can say that the type of sustainability young
people are most focused on is social sustainability. It’s clear that
young people think the most important aspect for this is being able
to orienteer wherever you are, and getting more people interested,
says Anna Wennertorp from O-Ringen.
– School orienteering is clearly an important subject for young
orienteers. It was the area most groups wanted to work with – even
in groups who were working on other areas, many people touched
on this topic in their own discussions.
Flexibility and the idea that schools should “understand” and
implement the things that make orienteering fun are two key ways
to improve young people’s experience of orienteering at school.
It’s worth saying that digitalisation and digital solutions are not
seen by young people to be so important. When talking to young
people at O-Ringen before the hackathon – when we talked
about, for example, launching a lift sharing app – many people
underlined that solutions like this were already being used, or
that people didn’t think they would work as people won’t use
them, continues Anna.
Where do we go from here?
– In three upcoming episodes of the O-Ringen podcast will focus
on young people and the following topics; travel, school orienteering
and inequality in circumstances, finishes Anna.
Would you and one or more friends like to join in?
would like to talk about, who you would like to join you and where
you’re from, and maybe you’ll get your own podcast episode!
senaste åren. Med nya platser, torg och byggnader är det snudd
kommer att pågå i många år framöver. Vi har bara börjat.
