SHB(GB) Horses lead the way
A Giant Year for Ros and Graffalo
By any standards Ros Canter and
Lordships Graffalo have enjoyed an
extraordinary season. In May,
Lincolnshire based Ros and Michele
Saul’s SHB(GB) registered Lordship
Graffalo led from start to finish to give
Ros her first Badminton win – the pair
was second last year. Amongst the haul
of prizes for the winning team was the
Sport Horse Breeding (GB) trophy
presented to the owner of the highest
placed horse by an approved SHB(GB)
stallion – the pair was also awarded this
trophy last year. Ros and 11-year-old
Graffalo finished the event in
immaculate style with a clear round
in the show jumping to win by a large
margin of 16.6 penalties.
In August the pair dominated the
European Championships – held at
Haras Du Pin – winning individual gold
and leading the British team to a
convincing gold also.
Bred by Writtle College, Graffalo is by
the former eventing stallion Grafenstolz
out of Pennie Wallace’s SHB(GB)
graded mare Cornish Queen by Rock
King a mare bred by Bridget Parker out
the advanced eventing mare Cornish
Faer.
It was a good year at Badminton for the
Studbook; British-based Irishman Austin
O’Connor and Colorado Blue rose from
34th after dressage to stand second after
cross country accruing the fastest round
of the challenging course finishing a
final third. Austin won the William Miflin
memorial trophy presented to the rider
of the horse closest to the optimum time.
The 14-year-old grey owned by The
Salty Syndicate and Austin, and bred by
Kate Jarvey, is by Jaguar Mail and like
Graffalo out of a Rock King mare.
Gemma Stevens finished in 6th place on
Chris Stone’s 15-year-old chestnut mare,
Jalapeno who was awarded the prize
for the highest placed mare.
