Futurity - Hartpury 30th July
breed 2-3 foals a year. To have bred
a national dressage champion and a
graded stallion is a dream come true.
We have big plans for Stolen Escador
next year.”
Our first Futurity event of the season on
30th July 2023 marked a return to
Hartpury College. The event was
organised with the lovely support by
GB PRE who held their annual show at
the same time, offering participating
breeders the opportunity to attend and
enjoy both events. At the British Breeding
Baileys Horse Feeds Futurity, we are
always delighted to work with all the UK
studbooks and to support and celebrate
the great diversity of sport horse and
sport pony breeding.
The Top scorer of the day with a fabulous
elite score of 9.05 was the dressage
stallion Day Dream Believer by Dream
Boy out of a Silbermond mare. He was
produced and expertly showcased by
Carsten Sandrock.
Says breeder Nikki Heath:
“We breed Flat, National Hunt and
Dressage, loving the differences of each
discipline. Having competed to PSG
years ago, I returned to dressage buying
17hh Hamberina after several glasses
of wine off the internet. Her first filly by
Morricone is with Rachel Crook. Her 4yo
So Unique colt licenced with the BWS
and was 3rd in the Regional
Prelims with Lily Payne after a few
outings. Hamberina throws carbon
copies of the stallion but in red, stamping
them with her personality and
forward-thinking way of going. Dream
Boy was used for long legged power
and performance producing Freddie,
now with Carsten Sandrock. She is now
in foal to Dynamic Dream who looks to
be an elegant horse with a quick hind
leg, fingers crossed.”
The top foal was the showjumping colt
PGS Gino who also achieved an Elite
score of 9.03. He is by Colmar out of a
Cento mare.
His breeder William Wherton tells us
more:
“We have a small breeding operation
which started a few years ago, where
we produce and buy 2 or 3 foals a year.
“Victoria has had 3 foals with us, PGS
Gino being the latest. Gino is full of
character and presence, he’s great
to have around! We chose Colmar
because we wanted to complement the
mare with size and scope as well as
supporting British breeding. The mare
herself jumped 1.40m. In the past we
have used Talan and Taloubet Z on
Victoria, both of these have great
conformation and presence. The future
plans are to expand and breed from the
best mares we can and use stallions that
have performed at the highest level.”
The final Elite at Hartpury went to the
dressage pony foal Gorgeous George
by Woodlander Santana out of a
Fourseasons Muffins Las mare.
Breeder Helen Lomas explains:
“At Fourseasons Stud, we are a close
knit team, passionate about producing
sports ponies and pure bred natives that
not only go on to excel in a range of
disciplines, but are also part of the
family. We pride ourselves on
continually producing foals and young
stock that are well handled and
educated. We feel this gives them the
best opportunity to excel throughout their
lives.
Fourseasons Persephone’s (aka Piglet)
last foal, Fourseasons Revelation was
also awarded Elite back in 2021, so we
were so excited for Gorgeous George to
be awarded Elite too!
George is a delight to have around. He
is a confident and brave colt, coupled
with his good looks and outstanding
paces, he is a special boy indeed.”
With a 8.55 Gold Premium, the highest
Scoring 4yo of the Day was the
dressage stallion Stolen Escador by
Escamillo out of a Riccio mare.
His breeder Michelle Dawson has high
hopes for the future:
“The Futurity at Hartpury was a big day
out for my 4yo stallion Stolen Escador
(Escamillo x Riccio x Parademarsch).
He's being trained by Sonnar
Murray-Brown, just like his half sister
Stolen Secret. She has won the Equine
Bridge, they are current Elementary
Gold BD national champions and won
the Tyrell Trophy as highest scoring
British bred mare at the British Dressage
national championships. Stolen Escador
has big footsteps to follow. Hartpury was
his first show under saddle and we were
worried how he would react. He was
amazing! He got really good marks from
the judges including 9s for conformation
and trot, getting a Gold award from the
Futurity and also passed his AES stallion
grading. Stolen Silver Sports Horses only
Achieving a 8.375 Gold Premium, the
highest scoring yearling of the day was
the dressage filly Romiera EJB (by Lago
Icon out of Lago Ventajola by Barquero
J F).
She is bred and owned by Emily Burns:
“This was my first time putting forward a
horse for futurity and what a great
experience. Thank you for the
welcoming, calm and laid-back
atmosphere.
“Romiera EJB is by my own stallion Lago
Icon who I have owned since he was 18
months old. He is currently competing at
Inter 1 and training towards Grand Prix.
She is out of my own mare Lago
Ventajola, who herself has proved to
be a great ridden horse with a brilliant
jump. Both Dam and Sire (and a few
others in my breeding programme) are
bred by the UKs leading Spanish horse
breeders, Yeguada Lago.
“My main focus with breeding a small
number of Spanish horses is not only to
provide the wow factor movement, but
are also beautiful, true to the breed type,
with long term soundness, exceptional
temperament and excellent trainability.
My ethos is to breed horses that will
succeed in all disciplines, and to be their
owner's best friend.
“From day one Romiera has had the
biggest voice, screaming her head off
at every opportunity, she is intelligent,
quick witted, and kind... although I did
receive an impressive bruise from her
during the weaning process!!
My future plans with Romiera are to
continue with a few in hand shows like
GBPRE, until she is ready to begin her
dressage career with me, hopefully
following in her sire's hoof prints!”
It was a great day for ponies at
Hartpury, too, with a great 8.3 Gold
Premium making Farleaze Lord TeeVee,
by Farleaze Lord Prenwyn out of a
Captain Gerrard mare, the highest
scoring sports pony yearling of the
event.
For Claire Moreton, breeding is very
much a family affair:
"We (my mother and I) started with the
stallion selection. Farleaze Lord Prenwyn
(Woody) is my own full Welsh section
D stallion, that we bred. I compete him
myself and so know what a wonderful
