Futurity - Northcote
21st and 22nd August
Our return to Northcote Stud was
our first of this year’s two-day British
Breeding Baileys Horse Feeds Futurity
venues, giving breeders the opportunity
to bring their older horses and ponies on
day 1 and the foals on the second day.
It’s a great venue and very conveniently
located for many breeders and owners
in the North.
Our return to Northcote Stud was
Breeding Baileys Horse Feeds Futurity
venues, giving breeders the opportunity
to bring their older horses and ponies on
day 1 and the foals on the second day.
It’s a great venue and very conveniently
located for many breeders and owners
in the North.
The top scoring entry across all ages and
disciplines was the showjumping foal
HSS Supremo by Ecclestone Z out of a
Clinton II mare. Bred by Sharon
Whiteway and presented by Adam
Birch, this lovely colt gained an Elite with
a score of 9.03.
His breeder Sharon tells us more:
HSS Supremo
“‘King’, as HSS Supremo is known at
home, is the 2nd foal from Diralda P
whom my daughter competed all the
way from 4-year-old to 140 speed
classes. Her first foal was sold at the
premium Bolesworth sport yearling
auction. We looked at the mare and
decided we needed longer legs and a
calmer temperament. We chose
Ecclestone Z as we felt he had the
quality we needed and the height
without being sharp as our mare is sharp
enough. It is our intention to keep him
entire and, unless we sell him before that,
we will grade him as a stallion and
compete him from age classes
hopefully to Grand Prix level. He stands
out amongst our foals this year as he has
a great personality and has
exceptional movement. Using Ecclestone
has given us exactly what we hoped
in him and another foal by him and I
couldn’t recommend him enough.
We are incredibly honoured that we had
the highest place foal on the day!”
Sharon had another highlight of the
event with HSS Start Me Up, by
Rotherwood Signature out of a Kannan
mare, who became the highest scoring
pony foal with a very good Gold
Premium of 8.7.
Says Sharon:
“‘Jack’, as he is known at home, has
been bred by me out of a top grade A
show jumping mare by Kannan out of a
Darco mare. He has been bred with my
granddaughter Emilia, currently aged
5, in mind if she ever decides she wants
to jump. The reason for breeding what I
hope ends up as a 148 pony is purely
that after being asked to source ponies
for clients we just could not find anything
of a decent calibre in the UK. I noticed
a huge hole in the market so decided I
would try to fill it. I used a 128 jumping
pony - Rotherwood Signature - as we
know him well and he has all the
characteristics you would want in a
pony, being both brave and talented.
Our mare is 16 hands and he is the
second pony hybrid we have bred from
her. Jack has a very pony attitude to life
in that he is mischievous and literally into
anything and everything. We have had
offers for him from both Ireland and the
USA as his breeding does make him a
bit unusual in the pony world. Currently
we are going to keep him entire, as he
is very easy to handle. Having watched
him pop a 5 barred gate to go and join
his friends last month I am sure he will
make an excellent jumping pony when
he is older.”
Northcote Stud has long been a great
venue for showjumping, and it is
therefore perhaps not surprising that
outstanding showjumping foals and
youngsters turned up in full force.
The second highest result and another
Elite with a score of 9 was another
showjumping foal in Turqueta TS, by
Casssalco out of a Darco mare, bred
by Walter Scott who had an excellent
Futurity this year.
Turqueta TS
Walter explains:
“Turqueta TS is named after a beautiful
beach in Menorca, our favourite holiday
destination and our first foal to score an
Elite!
“This is our 4th foal from Quevara van
‘t Merelsnest (Darco x Nabab) having
already had two foals by Tangelo and
one by Dominator Z who scored a gold
at the Futurity last year. Quevara is from
a prestigious star studded family with
too many 1.60m jumpers to mention but
Glasgow and the legendary Olympic
mare Sapphire are just a couple. Indeed
her own dam is jumping 1.45m and her
grandam jumped 1.50m. She already
has two licensed stallion siblings by
Comme Il Faut and Hardrock Z .She is
scanned in foal to Hardrock Z for2024!
“Tilly, as she is known at home, oozes
quality and presence, impressing with
her confirmation. Qualities for which
I had chosen Casallco whom I had
already used him on another mare. She
is intelligent, a quick learner but cheeky
which endears her to everyone. I will
keep her to add to my breeding
programme and she will go into the
sport. She may be the one to go all the
way and fulfil our dream. If not for sure
she will end up a beautiful horse, which
in the end as breeders we are all trying
to achieve.”
Walter also brought a 3-year-old
showjumping filly to Northcote in Perfect
Picture TS, a daughter of Eldorado van
de Zeshoek out of a London mare. She
was the highest scoring 3-year-old of
the event across all disciplines with an
impressive Gold Premium of 8.83.
Says Walter:
“Perfect Picture’s mother Hayavanta
was purchased in Holland as a foal
and has already had high scoring Gold
Award foals at Futurity events with fillies
by Diamant De Semilly and Van Gogh. I
did not present her as a foal as she was
born in 2020 just as COVID hit. As a
4-year-old Hayavanta passed the IBOP
test under saddle when the KWPN came
over to do the gradings .
