Futurity Report - The Grange MAS Royal Dart Says breeder Deborah Duncan: " MAS Royal Dart is a 100 % Crabbet English Arabian who is my first home bred youngster. He has an extremely sunny disposition and I hope to keep him entire to improve the Arabian gene pool in the UK. He will be backed and ridden on as a performance horse in both Endurance and Dressage . “His sire is HOYS winner Silvern Prince who is owned by Caroline Sussex and his dam is Palma Benay owned by Anne Brown. Dart is the third Gold Premium son sired by both this mare and sire so he comes from an illustrious Arabian dynasty. " The highest scoring dressage 3yo was Forever Romance who achieved a Gold Premium of 8. He is by For Romance out of an Everdale Mare. His owner Samantha Gualtieri has exciting plans for the future. “Thank you so much for putting on a great event! Forever Romance (Romeo) was bred by Hilary Westgarth of Ardmore Stud, he is by For Romance x Everdale. He has been stamped with a fantastic temperament and attitude from both these prolific stallions. Over the winter I plan to start him under saddle and produce him slowly. I would also like to have him licensed over the winter as the plan is to keep him entire. The future goal is to produce him through the levels hopefully to Grand Prix and also to become a British based breeding stallion.” The highest scoring eventing foal of the day was Master Luc by Silvester out of a Rousseau daughter, a full brother to Master Rousseau. Futurity Report - Northallerton It was our first time at Northallerton Equestrian Centre, where we held a very well attended Futurity event on 17th September. We loved the friendly atmosphere and good location, and saw a wide range of wonderful youngsters. A particularly successful day was had by Team Hayler who turned up in full force and showcased a fantastic range of promising young horses all the way from foal age to ridden 4-year-olds. The youngsters were expertly presented by Andrew Wright, husband of Bobby Hayler, and Paul Hayler, known to many of us as the former British Dressage Training Director and a highly successful international rider. All photos - Horsepower Creative Futurity - Northallerton Equestrian Center 7th September marks of 9, a great result at what is often a difficult age to show youngsters. They also presented the two overall highest scores of the day, which were gained by the lovely 4yo mare T. H. Leviosa who is by L’Espoir out of an Almaz mare and by the foal L’ Loxley, also by L’Espoir out of Bobby’s Grand Prix mare Josinaa van de Peelvenhoeve. Interestingly, Josinaa is jumping bred through and through and is by the 1.60m showjumping stallion Emilion out of an Odermus R mare. Yearlings can be at a difficult stage in their development, but the importance of getting support and feedback at that formative age, combined with the great opportunity to practise travelling away from home makes the Futurity at that age a valuable experience for owners and breeders alike. This makes it all the more impressive to gain an elite score at that stage. One who achieved this great accolade is Forgone Proposition, a filly for eventing bred and presented by Nicola Hazlett. She impressed with exceptional conformation, balanced gaits and flawless management and presentation, gaining her marks of 9.5 from the veterinary team and an overall score of 9.05, which was the highest yearling score across all disciplines on the day. Well known for their enduring successes in dressage training and competing, the breeding operation at Team Hayler is very much informed by a deep and intimate knowledge of what is required in a successful performance horse: trainability, temperament, rideability and the all important expert production. Breeding from mares that have been successful in the sport in their own right provides a reliable foundation and inspiration for stallion choices. It is very interesting to see that all the youngsters showcased by the team were by British based stallions, proving that it is often more valuable to have the opportunity to use a stallion one has been able to see in the flesh, than to go for the latest in international breeding fashions Leonidas The proof is very much in the pudding, and in the end Team Hayler went home with an astonishing achievement. Not only did they present the highest scoring dressage yearling in Leonidas, who is by Paul Hayler’s stallion Lonswelt who is co-owned with Peter Spence out of a State Premium Florencio mare, a young horse whose wonderful trot and harmonious conformation earned him T. H. Leviosa L’ Loxley impressed the evaluators with three very expressive gaits, gaining him dream marks of 9.5 for his trot and for his canter. Overall, he scored a convincing Elite of 9.175, a mark she shared with T. H. Leviosa. This young mare was produced beautifully and presented under saddle by Andrew Wright. As well as gaining lovely marks of 9.25 for her trot and canter, no mean feat in such a young horse who is still finding her full balance under saddle, T. H. Leviosa also impressed with her wonderful conformation which gained a score of 9.5. She is a naturally expressive mare with a quick hind leg, and certainly a horse to watch for the future. L’Loxley Forgone Proposition Nicola tells us a bit more about her gorgeous youngster: “Her dam was herself awarded a Futurity Elite as a 3-year-old and is by Primitive Proposal. I campaigned young event classes with her. Unfortunately she sustained an injury, which is why we decided to put her in foal. We used the stallion Forinth on the recommendation from my jump trainer who had previously owned and ridden him - it turns out the match has worked really well and we are delighted with her. She will be aimed at some in-hand showing as a 2 and 3-year-old but undoubtedly her future will lie in eventing, so when the time is right she will be sold. Thanks for running the Futurity's, it's a great and educational day for both the horses and their breeders!” Staying with the discipline, the highest eventing foal score was achieved by Grufallo’s Child who was bred and presented by Phillip Jones. This lovely colt achieved an Elite score of 9.025, with a perfect mark of 10 for his truly exceptional canter. BRITISH BREEDER| 43
