GB PRE were thrilled to be able to
host the first of the British Breeding
Futurity Evaluation days at our National
Championship Breed Show at Hartpury
College in late July. A total of 23 horses
were presented if which 7 were Spanish.
Three of our British PRE breeders have
given their insight and views on the
event.
In introduction, my name is Charlotte
Crocker-Westlake, I am a co-owner/
founder of a Spanish Horse Stud
called ‘Yeguada Lago’. Which simply
translates to Lake herd of Mares. Just a
little wordplay on our family name in
explanation.
We have been breeding Spanish horses
very successfully in Dorset for 20 years
now and have been very lucky to win
many prizes for our efforts along the
way.
This year we entered two fillies into the
Futurity. It was not our first time entering
a horse to be evaluated. In 2021 Mat
Baker presented our homebred colt Lago
Paladin at The Grange. He did very well
and got a high silver. At 2 years old he
was very lanky and lean. Still beautiful
in our eyes obviously, but it would have
been better to present him when he was
looking more developed. At 3 and 4
years old he went to win Colt Champion
at GBPRE two years in a row, which
proves my point really.
This time round Mat Baker presented our
homebred fillies; Lago Siren, who is a
yearling and Lago Rosa, who is 2 years
old (Now owned by Swanmore Stud,
home of dressage riders Ben St-John
James and Roland Tong, which is more
than a little exciting!).
These fillies are full sisters by the Elite
grand Prix Stallion Impaciente II and
out of a prize-winning dam, Remachita
Maynou IV. Remachita is a Calificado
(qualified) mare, who has been
recognised by Spain’s “Royal Purebred
Spanish Horse Breeders Association”
ANCCE as having the conformation
traits for dressage.
We were very pleased that both fillies
gained a Silver, this time they were a
bit over-weight and typically had a
last-minute growth spurt behind. The
fillies were both VERY excited about
their loose evaluation and proceeded to
bounce around the indoor arena, instead
of cantering. Which made me realise that
I should have practiced this with them
before-hand. You live and you learn!
It was interesting to present both fillies
in the Futurity alongside our National
Breed Show (A qualifier for the World
Conformation Championships for PRE
horses held in Spain). Both of our fillies
won their respective classes two days
prior to the Futurity. Interestingly, the
yearling filly that came second to ours,
achieved a gold in her evaluation and
was the highest scoring yearling of the
day. Which makes me very proud as
well, because, as it happens, we bred
both the sire and dam of that filly. Not to
mention she was bred and is still owned
by my best friend Emily Burns. I am
looking forward to following their future
together.
