Futurity Report - Catherston Stud
“We bought Lyra (Renkum Celeste) from
the Mindermans at Renkum Stud at the
beginning of the year. As well as being
a scopey and athletic mare she has a
lovely temperament and is quick to learn
and eager to please. Both her dam and
sire lines include a number of 1.60m
jumpers, including Baloubet de Rouet,
Darco, Inish Mac Nevin and Renkum
Valentino. Her sire Baloubet Junior Z has
produced offspring competing at the top
level of both Eventing and Showjumping,
so we hope she will follow in their
footsteps! We are planning to breed
from her in the future and will use her
Futurity assessment to choose stallions
that will complement her and improve
particular areas with the aim of
producing correct, athletic foals with
good brains.”
Lady Darcy
The top scoring pony 2-year-old was
Lady Darcy by Blaencrymlyn Hywel out
of a mare by Goldenfields Silver Star.
Liberty Barrett is proud of her filly:
“Darcy is my first homebred out of my
own Welsh x Arab cremello mare. As the
pandemic started there were no
competitions or events running so I
thought about potentially putting my
jumping mare Sisi in foal. Sire ‘Harry’ as
he is known at home is a versatile stallion
with tremendous scope over fences and
big bold paces in the dressage arena.
A kind tempered stallion who passes
this onto his progeny. He also crosses
extremely well with TBs to produce
excellent Riding Club, Eventers and
Showjumpers. His and Sisi's
personalities really complemented each
other. It's been a real learning curve from
the breeding to the delivery to now the
training.
My plan for Darcy is to make her into an
eventing sports pony, with her unusual
colouring, markings and her gentle
personality I think she will definitely be
turning heads. Darcy is already proving
to be something special receiving
compliments wherever she goes.”
Garthfach Endeavour
The top scorer among the jumping
2-year-olds was Garthfach Endeavour
who is by Ynslyns Orlando out of an
Ashdale Misarko mare bred by Penny
Teague.
Owner Vicky Lacey explains:
“I have owned Garthfach Endeavour,
aka Buddy Bear, since he was 6
months old. He had the long trip from
Wales to the Isle of Wight. He has such
character and is always playful and into
everything. Buddy absolutely loves to
compete, the bigger the atmosphere the
better he performs.
He has recently taken Champion at
the New Forest county show and the
Isle of Wight county show along with
numerous champion and reserve titles at
other mainland competitions through the
summer.
I am extremely excited for his future
under saddle where he will be focused
on Dressage and showjumping. He’s a
special boy and I’m incredibly lucky to
call him my own.”
The highest scoring dressage 2-year-old
was Wonderlust, by Wavavoom out of
a Fürst Romancier, who was bred by
Charlotte Mariosa.
Says Charlotte:
“Wonderlust, called Macc at home, is
the first foal I've bred and I'm incredibly
proud of his attitude to life and learning.
He came to the Futurity as a yearling
and it's great to see how, in coming
again this year, he's really taken it in his
stride. Despite 2 being an awkward
stage of development he was really
well-behaved and almost too laid back!
His mother by Fürst Romancier is quite
hot and it was really important to me to
find a stallion with a great temperament
and good ridability. I drove up to see
Wavavoom to get a feel for his character
and demeanour before using him and
I've been thrilled by the result to date.
I've loved the breeding process and
whilst it's not for the feint-hearted at
times, I've found it immensely rewarding.
Both the BHHS and Futurity have been
great in helping me with my learning
along the way. Macc is going to be a
big boy I think but I'm not in a rush with
him so he'll have all the time he needs to
grow and mature into what will hopefully
be a wonderful and impressive dressage
horse.”
