Studbook News - NPS National Pony Society News Romanno Spotless and Laura Browne. In 2023 the National Pony Society is celebrating 130 years since it was founded to encourage the breeding, registration and improvement of Riding Ponies and Mountain & Moorland ponies. British Riding Ponies (BRP) are incredibly successful in the show ring but the unique blend of native pony blood, crossed with arab, thoroughbred and anglo arab means these ponies are also incredible athletes and very versatile. Debby Walton-Smith reports that her consistent mare Romanno Spotless (Stanley Grange Regal Heights x Chiddock Spot On, bred by Jennifer Gilchrist) continues to add to a very strong performance CV. This season she has been winning at British Novice show jumping, qualifying for the second rounds and recently took the Part Bed Arab Novice level at the British Dressage Associated Championships at Bury Farm. They also qualified for the BD Nationals and the BE grassroots championships. Romanno Spotless is ridden by Laura Browne and the now 10 year old mare is a fantastic example of the versatility and quality of the British Riding Pony. Another pony who is proving to be multi-talented is Stanley Grange Scandalous Silk (Anton Scandal x Tartan Silk). Owners Charlotte and Sophie Hall purchased ‘Bunty’ as a weanling from breeder Jerome Harforth. Hoping she would make a small hack, Bunty had a successful in hand career but after backing it was clear she would stay under 14.2hh and so a new career beckoned. Her jumping talent was evident so Charlotte and Sophie enlisted the help of local event rider Jess Butler. As she is only a five-year-old, to date they have focussed more on training than competing. The pair have already taken the 70cm Reserve Champion title at the NPS/Anthony Evans Arena Eventing championships and won their first BD competition at Vale View. They went on to be awarded a wildcard for the BD Young Pony Championships at Hartpury Premier League. Stanley Grange Scandalous Silk and Jess Butler earning their NPS Arena Eventing qualification. The British Riding Pony breed show is held as part of the NPS Summer Championships at Malvern in August. Winning the Vincent Taylor Trophy and crowned breed champion was the very successful stallion Moor Hall Peter Pan (Stanley Grange Cocksure x Moor Hall Tinkerbelle). Owned and bred by Mandy Godden and Mrs Newnham, Peter Pan was champion BRP stallion and national champion part bred in addition to winning the Vincent Taylor. Showcasing the breed to its biggest audience is Horse of the Year Show, where BRPs took both Supreme Horse and Pony titles thanks to Champion Hack Forgeland Hydepark (Kilvington Scoundrel x Fernhill Park) and Champion Part bred Swan Lake (Llanarth Topcat x Dance All Night, bred by Jerome Harforth and David Dixon). BRP also took the Children’s Riding Pony of the Year, Mini Show Pony of the Year and Coloured Horse/Pony of the Year titles! Finally it was wonderful to see a BRP also competing in the pony show jumping with Wadacre Winnie the Pooh (Wadacre William x Gwauniarll Moira, bred by Jeanette Matthews-Griffiths).
