Endurance Arabs to the fore in the
Youngstock Evaluations - Anne Brown
The Arab Horse Society is delighted that
Arabians continue to score well in the
Endurance section of British Breeding‘s
Youngstock Evaluations, including 4
year old Arab mare Lakkanas Spirit S A
by AHS Premium stallion Crystal Magic
who gained a Gold Premium this year.
The video option, particularly for foals at
foot, is welcomed by mare-owners not
wanting to travel babies to an Evaluation
venue, especially if the dam is in foal
again.
We are seeing these youngsters flourish
once they ’graduate’ and start their
long-distance careers.
To encourage breeding from the best
sires, the Arab Horse Society has for
many years rewarded mare owners
who use proven AHS Premium stallions.
Many Premium sires, especially those
from Biddesden Stud and Avonbrook
Stud, also produce successful Eventing
horses, and increasingly dressage
horses as well. PS Aurora Silk by AHS
Premium stallion Marcus Aurelius has
excelled in Dressage this year. Marcus
himself won the Style and Performance
Championship at the national Veteran
Horse Society Championships in
October.
Xquisite Dream, by the prolific
AHS Premium stallion Psy Dream,
placed fourth in the Ridden Arabian
Championship at the Horse of the Year
Show in October.
These exceptional sires – pure, part or
Anglo Arab – can gain their Premium
status in one of three ways. They can
complete the tough two-day
multi-discipline Stallion Performance
Test (although sadly suspended this
year) for Premium Performance Status;
alternatively, they gain the Premium
Ridden Merit accolade by their own
exceptional results under saddle, or
they earn Premium Merit status through
the success of their progeny in Affiliated
ridden performance. All AHS Premium
stallion must have proven fertility, passed
a strict vet exam, be available at public
stud by natural covering or AI, and be
registered with the AHS.

A breeder choosing one of these
Premium stallions for their Premium mare
receives a monetary Premium - currently
£200 - and free registration of the foal
with the AHS. The mare does not need
to have any Arabian blood to qualify for
a Premium! Non-Premium mares may
receive a Nomination, at the discretion
of the Premium stallion owner, to receive
a Premium - currently £100 - and free
registration of the foal with the AHS.
High profile AHS Premium stallions in the
past have included Tamarillo, winner of
both Badminton and Burghley, racing
supremo Sambist, whose frozen semen
is still available, Silvern Prince, a former,
‘Horse of the Year Show Ridden Arab
Champion’, and a current 100-mile
endurance winner Watt du Colombier
who still competes regularly with owner/
rider Esther Groen.

Sadly, some Premium stallions are no
longer with us, but it is so gratifying to
read of the success of their progeny
round the world, such as Chatanz’s
son, Warrens Hill Chayze, winner of
this year’s Spanish National Endurance
Championship over 160kms, and third
in the World Championships a couple of
years ago.
Arabians are first and foremost ridden
horses, with the stamina, temperament
and sound conformation to last a rider a
lifetime.
