απόσταση λίγων μέτρων από το Δημαρχείο της Αθήνας
βρίσκεται η κεντρική αγορά της πόλης, γνωστή ως Βαρβάκειος Αγορά. Θεωρείται –και όχι
άδικα– ένα από τα πιο «ζωντανά» κομμάτια της πόλης. Περισσότερα από 73 καταστήματα
στεγάζονται σε αυτό το, κατασκευασμένο από γυαλί και μέταλλο, ορθογώνιο κτίριο του
19ου αιώνα, το οποίο χτίστηκε με χρήματα του εθνικού ευεργέτη Ιωάννη Βαρβάκη. Πρόκειται
για την κεντρική κρεαταγορά, ψαραγορά και λαχαναγορά της Αθήνας. Είναι ο χώρος
στον οποίο κάνουν τις προμήθειές τους από εστιάτορες και σεφ μέχρι καθημερινοί
άνθρωποι, που απλά αναζητούν τις καλύτερες τιμές ή και την ποικιλία που ενίοτε διαθέτει
η αγορά. Κρεατικά και ψαρικά, λαχανικά και φρούτα, κονσέρβες και μπαχαρικά, απορρυπαντικά
και τρόφιμα, τυροκομικά και γαλακτοκομικά προϊόντα, μέχρι είδη οικιακής χρήσης.
Ο κόσμος της είναι ένα πολύχρωμο ψηφιδωτό. Από τα χαράματα, οι έμποροι και οι επαγγελματίες,
προκειμένου να προλάβουν τα φρέσκα προϊόντα που ξεφορτώνονται από τα
φορτηγά ψυγεία και τα κοντέινερ, ντυμένοι βαριά, περιμένουν στους γύρω καφενέδες, πίνοντας
τον πρώτο καφέ της μέρας. Πιο νωρίς είχαν χαιρετήσει τους ξενύχτηδες που τελείωναν
τη βραδινή τους έξοδο με ζεστή κρεατόσουπα σε κάποιο από τα cult μαγειρεία.
Αργότερα, μετά τις 7.30 το πρωί αρχίζουν να καταφτάνουν οι πελάτες. Οικογενειάρχες
που πετάγονται πριν τη δουλειά τους για τα ψώνια της ημέρας, συνταξιούχοι που έχουν
αναλάβει «να αγοράσουν φρέσκο ψαράκι για τα εγγόνια» και νοικοκυρές που προτιμούν
In a distance of few metres from the Town Hall of Athens, the central city market is found,
known as the Varvakios Market. It is considered –and not unfairly– one of the most live
parts of the city. More than seventy three (73) shops are accommodated in this,
manufactured from glass and metal rectangle building of the 19th century, which was built
with money coming from the national benefactor Ioannis Varvakis.
We are talking about the central meat, fish and vegetable market of Athens. It is the place
where restaurateurs and chefs are making their supplies from, but also everyday people
who simply seek the best prices or even the variety that occasionally the Market offers. In
the market you may find things such as meat, fish, vegetables and fruits, tins and spices,
detergents and food stuff, cheese and dairy products, up to things for domestic use.
The Market’s world, a multicoloured mosaic. From daybreak, tradesmen and professionals,
in order to get in time the fresh products, that are unloaded from the refrigerator lorries
and containers, dressed heavily, are waiting in the nearby cafés while drinking their first
coffee of the day. Earlier they had greeted the people who where just finishing their night
out with a hot meat soup in one of the cult restaurants. Later, after 7.30 in the morning,
customers are beginning to arrive. Family men that are coming to the market to do their
daily shopping, just before their way to work, pensioners that have taken on the
responsibility «to buy fresh fish for the grandchildren» and housewifes that prefer the
