με διθυράμβους, οι celebrities σκανάρουν τις δημιουργίες του για τις πιο σημαντικές εμφανίσεις
τους στο κόκκινο χαλί, οι στυλίστες νιώθουν ανακούφιση αφού επιτέλους κάποιος
designer σχεδιάζει ρούχα για άνδρες, που τους επιτρέπουν να φαίνονται άνδρες και οι
κριτικοί μόδας αναγνωρίζουν σε εκείνον την ικανότητα να μπλέκει μοναδικά τα vintage
στοιχεία με τα νέα υλικά, δημιουργώντας απόλυτα διαχρονικές κολεξιόν. Και μπορεί ο John
Varvatos να ίδρυσε τη δική του εταιρία πριν από 8 χρόνια,ο ίδιος ωστόσο δεν είναι χθεσινή
ιστορία στη βιομηχανία της μόδας. Ξεκίνησε να εργάζεται το 1983 ως επικεφαλής πωλήσεων
του Ralph Lauren, ενώ παράλληλα παρακολουθούσε βραδινά μαθήματα μόδας.
Δύο χρόνια αργότερα, ο ίδιος ο Lauren, διακρίνοντας το ταλέντο του, τον μετέφερε στο
τμήμα σχεδιαστών. Από εκεί έφυγε το 1990 για να πρωταγωνιστήσει στο λανσάρισμα του
CK στον Calvin Klein. Πέντε χρόνια αργότερα επέστρεψε στον Ralph Lauren ως επικεφαλής
σχεδιαστής. Έπρεπε ωστόσο να περάσουν ακόμη 5 χρόνια για να δημιουργήσει το δικό
του label, το οποίο σήμερα δεν περιορίζεται στα ρούχα, τα αξεσουάρ και τα παπούτσια.
Κάτω από την επωνυμία John Varvatos υπάρχει η πιο νεανική και προσιτή σειρά Star
USA, μια ανδρική και γυναικεία συλλογή για την Converse, μια ολοκληρωμένη σειρά ανδρικής
περιποίησης, δύο αρώματα, μια σειρά γυαλιών. Και έπεται μακροσκελέστατη συνέχεια.
Ο ίδιος παραδέχεται ότι δεν σταματάει ποτέ. Χωρίς αυτό όμως να τον εμποδίζει να
έχει πάντα πρωτοποριακές ιδέες. Απόδειξη; Στις διαφημιστικές καμπάνιες του πρωταγωνιστές
είναι μεγάλοι αστέρες της ροκ, όπως ο Iggy Pop και ο Alice Cooper, οι οποίοι από τη
μία δηλώνουν τη λατρεία του John για τη ροκ και από την άλλη χαρακτηρίζουν το ανατρεπτικό
στοιχείο των κολεξιόν του. Ο John Varvatos, ο σχεδιαστής που έχει κερδίσει τρεις
φορές από τον Σύλλογο Αμερικανών Σχεδιαστών (CFDA) τον τίτλο του Menswear
Designer of the year, βρέθηκε στην Αθήνα ως επίτιμος καλεσμένος της 6ης Diners Athens
Collections In Style κι εμείς φάγαμε μαζί του πρωινό στο Hilton Athens όπου και έμενε.

των άλλων σχεδιαστών;
Το brand John Varvatos περικλείει μια ολόκληρη κουλτούρα. Απευθυνόμαστε στον έξυπνο
και μορφωμένο άνδρα, που εκτιμά τις λεπτομέρειες στη ζωή, γιατί τελικά αυτές κάνουν τη
διαφορά. Τα σχέδια δεν είναι ποτέ κραυγαλέα, δίνουμε σημασία στην ποιότητα και επιμέ-

clothes for men that allows them to look manly and the fashion critics recognize in him
the ability to uniquely mix the vintage elements together with the new materials creating
in this way absolutely diachronic collections.And it may be that John Varvatos founded his
own company 8 years ago, however he is an old story in the fashion industry himself. He
started working in 1983 as head of sales in Ralph Lauren, while at the same time he took
evening fashion classes.Two years later Lauren himself, recognizing his talent, transferred
him to the designers' department. He left from there in 1990 in order to take a lead role
in the CK launch in Calvin Klein. Five years later he returned to Ralph Lauren as head of
designers. However, five more years had to pass before he creates his own label, which
today is not limited just in clothes, accessories and shoes. Under the label John Varvatos
there is the younger and accessible line Star USA, male and female collection for
Converse, a completed line of male care, two perfumes, and a line of glasses.And there is
plenty more to come. He admits that he never stops.This though, does not prevent him
from having pioneering ideas. Proof? In his advertising campaigns, protagonists are big
Rock Stars, such as Iggy Pop and Alice Cooper, state John’s love for Rock which from one
hand and from the other hand they illustrate the rebellious element in his collections. John
Varvatos, the designer who have been awarded three times from the Council of Fashion
Designers of America (CFDA) the title of Menswear Designer of the Year, was in Athens
as an honorary guest of the 6th Diners Athens Collections In Style and we had breakfast
together in Hilton Athens Hotel where he stayed.
For which type of men are your clothes designed for? What is the difference from what
the other designers offer?
The John Varvatos brand encompasses an entire culture.We address the intelligent and
educated man that appreciates fine details in life, because in the end these make the
difference.The drawings are never too loud; we give importance in the quality and insist
on the details.The most important element however is the masculinity, something that I
do not see in enough designers;and even if men are straight or gay they always appreciate
masculinity.
