saint formed the basic character of his path.
After his graduation, he went to study abroad: in 1920 he went to Brussels with a
scholarship and in 1921 he went to Berlin where his teacher was the famous composer
Ferruccio Busoni, who had influenced him profoundly. Mitropoulos abandoned
composing and playing the piano after Busoni pointed out that his performance was too
passionate. Disappointed, he decided to work exclusively with directing orchestras.
Nonetheless, he did brilliant work with composing that he abandoned completely around
1930. He had already written a series of orchestra pieces, bedroom music and also piano.
At the age of 23 he had already presented the opera «Sister Beatrice» that was a great
success with Katina Paxinou as the protagonist. His compositions were obviously
influenced by modern musical trends, the twelve phonemic method and the atonal
school.
In 1924, after a year of being the assistant director of the State Opera Unter der Linden
orchestra, he returned to Athens and that is when the «Greek period» began (1924-1937):
he became the co-director, along with Manolis Kalomiris, of the Hellenic Conservatory’s
Orchestra until 1925. He then directed the Association of Concerts Orchestra (1925-27)
and the Athenian Conservatory’s Orchestra (1927-1939). In 1930 his career takes off as a
maestro with popular European orchestras: first stop the Berlin Philharmonic with which
he presented as a soloist-maestro Prokofiev’s difficult 3rd piano concerto.
The concert’s huge success, but also the unique way he managed both roles, opened the
way for his international career. A few years later, in Paris, Prokovief had the chance to
hear his work performed by Mitropoulos where he said: «He has made this piece his
own. I should write another concerto for me».
Until 1937, when he was the conductor of the Symphonic Orchestra of Minneapolis, he
has already worked with the most significant European symphonic ensembles as guest
conductor. From 1938 until 1949, Dimitris Mitropoulos became the first conductor of
American orchestras with triumphant reviews taking him to the top. In 1944 he became
the artistic director of the Orchestra of Philadelphia.
In 1949 he reaches the top: together with Leopold Stokowski they became permanent
co-directors of the New York Philharmonic. Stokowski resigned in 1950. In 1951 the Greek
maestro becomes the artistic director until 1957 where Leonard Bernstein takes his
position in an uproarious way. The reason for his removal: the orchestra’s obvious
indiscipline, his delicate and good natured personality that was seen as a weakness –
Mitropoulos said: «I want to be a maestro-companion and not a maestro-dictator» - also
the modern repertoire that the Greek conductor had chosen, was not liked by the
administration because ticket sales had gone down. The relationship between
Mitropoulos-Bernstein, where in the previous decade was a relationship of mentor-pupil,
had gone cold because of the ambitious and very competitive personality of the pupil.
His twenty-year career at all major orchestras in the USA (Minneapolis, Boston,
Philadelphia, Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic) was brilliant. The most
significant maestros and composers bowed before his work every time they heard it. The
people and the critics admired his style, his unique talent, his unusual capability as a
maestro and the way with which he guided an orchestra to play with perfection.
On the other hand, there were also bad reviews from the management of orchestras
mainly about the repertoire: Mitropoulos was easily «bored» with the same classic
material and he usually tried to add into the program modern experimental work from
new writers. He presented more than 80 new pieces of work and he was one of the best
interpreters of Gustav Mahler. His podium appearances were magical. Mitropoulos
managed to electrify musicians. Giorgos Seferis has commented on the way that
Mitropoulos knew how to win over and excite the members of the orchestra. His
musical metamorphosis on stage was unique: it resembled a religious experience during
which he came out of his body in order to reach the essence of the musical piece. This
procedure of self-transgression was determinative and was a vision of true revelation for
