Raised on a farm in southern Bond county; Deputy County Clerk several years; two terras city clerk of Greenville; elected circuit clerk and ex-officio Recorder in 1904-. In a short time "The Ladies' Library Association" was organized with a large number of enthusiastic members. They found that their only way of raising funds for their undertaking would be by getting up entertainments of various kinds. Nothing daunted, they planned a series of suppers, concerts, lectures, etc. Their first supper was given in the old Congregational church, which stood on the site of the present Carnegie Library. The supper gotten up and prepared by such energetic and accomplished housekeepers and good managers, was a great success and was patronized by a great part of the community. The proceeds amounted to one hundred dollars, and formed the nucleus to which was added the sums accumulated from time to time, which were realized from various entertainments. With the small beginning of about one hundred dollars worth of books, the number of volumes at present in the library has increased to about four thousand. Added to these Is a large number of the best magazines and periodicals, which have been bound annually and placed upon the shelves.
