A native <strong>of</strong> Switzerland, who came<br />

to America in 1881, received her<br />

medical education in St. Louis<br />

and has been a resident <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greenville</strong><br />

for 12 years.<br />

to lay the matter before the<br />

Womans' Relief Corps and to solicit<br />

their aid in our work At this first<br />

meeting an executive committee was<br />

appointed to take charge <strong>of</strong> matters<br />

that would not be practicable to lay<br />

before the full committee, to-wit:<br />

Lowis. J. H. Ladd and Wm. D. Mat-<br />

ney.<br />

This committee went to work and<br />

kept the ball rolling. They used<br />

every means to interest the people<br />

in the matter; met all objections<br />

and finally reached the point where<br />

they saw success crown their efforts.<br />

In August 1901, a genera, rally<br />

<strong>of</strong> the friends was held, at wh>h<br />

time General John C. Black, National<br />

Commander <strong>of</strong> the G. A. R. was<br />

present and delivered a fine aldress.<br />

At this meeting $390 was pledged<br />

and the committee began to lay<br />

plans to begin work. After advertis-<br />

ing, the contract was let lo S. O.<br />

Sanders <strong>of</strong> Centralia and early in<br />

the spring <strong>of</strong> 19 03, work was begun,<br />

and completed August 19, 1903.<br />

The committee decided to unveil<br />

the monument September 19. 1903,<br />

the fortieth anniversary <strong>of</strong> the battle<br />

<strong>of</strong> Chickamauga. Saturday Septem-<br />
