was erected in 1S94. The building<br />
was proposed by the Board <strong>of</strong> Education<br />
that was elected in the spring<br />
<strong>of</strong> 1893. The proposition was submitted<br />
to a vote <strong>of</strong> the legal voters<br />
<strong>of</strong> the district with the result that<br />
the proposition to issue the necessary<br />
bonds carried by thirty majority.<br />
The members <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong><br />
Education at that time were Col.<br />
J. B. Reid, president: W. E. Robinson.<br />
C. E. Cook. T. P. Morey, .1.<br />
Seaman, E. B. Wise and Dr. W. T.<br />
Easley. In the following spring<br />
Col Reid and T. P. Morey retired<br />
and Dr. E. P. Poindexter was elected<br />
president and H, B. Henninger<br />
a member instead <strong>of</strong> T. P. Morey.<br />
The initiatory steps to secure the<br />
new building were taken by the circulation<br />
<strong>of</strong> a petition by Ward<br />
Reid and R. C. Morris, asking for<br />
a special election. The election was<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>. C. N. Peak,<br />
iuperlntendent <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Greenville</strong> ]<br />
schools, 1905, succeeding E.;.B. Brooks<br />
resigned.<br />
Faculty <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Greenville</strong> Piulic Schools. 1904-5.<br />
held on February 23, 1S94. The<br />
vote stood 315 for and 285 against.<br />
The bull ling cost $19,600, the<br />
bonds <strong>being</strong> taken by Holies and<br />
Sons at their face value. The contract<br />
was awarded to W. B. Bradsby<br />
and Chas. Stewart, <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greenville</strong>.<br />
The corner stone was laid by the<br />
Masonic fraternity Friday, August<br />
10, 1894. The building was ready<br />
for occupancy about the first <strong>of</strong> the<br />
year 1895.<br />
For the school year 19 5-6 the<br />
following teachers were employed:<br />

Principal, J. C. Hemphill; Latin,<br />
Miss Louise McCord: Grade teachers,<br />
Misses Emma Streuber, Pearl Sanderson,<br />
Lillie Apple, Mary Lewis,<br />
Mrs. Ida Travis, Misses Neva Young,<br />
Mary Mulford, Anna Leppard, Anna<br />
Mulford and Esther Chapman.<br />
