The <strong>Greenville</strong> Building and Savings<br />
Association can truthfully be<br />
classed as one <strong>of</strong> the pioneer in-<br />
stitutions <strong>of</strong> our City, and its <strong>of</strong>ficers<br />
and members can well be proud <strong>of</strong><br />
its prosperous and useful career.<br />
Bond County Soldiers'<br />
Monument.<br />
AT<br />
the eleventh annual meeting <strong>of</strong><br />
; the Bond County Soldiers' Association,<br />
held in <strong>Greenville</strong>, October<br />
IS, 189 9, the first steps were taken<br />
to erect a monument, to the memory<br />
<strong>of</strong> the men who answered to their<br />
country's call from 1861 to 1865.<br />
The writer here<strong>of</strong> started the ball<br />

tion that the Bond County Soldiers'<br />
Association take steps to erect a<br />
monument in the city <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greenville</strong>,<br />
to the memory <strong>of</strong> the citizens <strong>of</strong><br />
said county who responded to the<br />
call for volunteers in the war <strong>of</strong> the<br />
rebellion; and that a committee be<br />
appointed by the commander to<br />
take hold <strong>of</strong> the matter and push<br />
the work. This resolution was<br />
passed unanimously and the commander<br />
later appointed the following<br />
committee under the resolution,<br />
towit: Wm. D. Matney, Chairman,<br />
<strong>Greenville</strong>; John H. Ladd, Lagrange:<br />
John Tischhauser, Burgess;<br />
George F. Harlan, Mills: William<br />
Meyer. Tamalco; A. D. Cullom, Mulberry<br />

<strong>Greenville</strong>: J. W. Daniels. Woburn;<br />
Dr. J. A. Black, Pleasant Mound;<br />

The chairman called a meeting<br />
<strong>of</strong> the committee for Saturday, November<br />
11, 1899, and the following<br />
named members were present,<br />
William Meyer, Dr. J. A. Black. J.<br />
W. Daniels, George F. Harlan. Wm.<br />
D. Matney, Col. J. B. Reid, W. W.<br />
Lowis, John H. Ladd, Anton Phillipsen<br />
and I. H. Denny. The committee<br />
organized by electing Wm.<br />
D. Matney, president, W. W. Lowis,<br />
secretary and Charles W. Watson,<br />
treasurer.<br />
The chairman told the members<br />
present <strong>of</strong> the desirability <strong>of</strong> the<br />
success <strong>of</strong> the undertaking and<br />
called for suggestions <strong>of</strong> plans for<br />
the pushing <strong>of</strong> this effort to success,<br />
not failing to impress on the committee<br />
some <strong>of</strong> the difficulties we<br />
would encounter, but impressing the<br />
idea on the comrades that by a<br />
"long pull:" a touching <strong>of</strong> elbows
