Who came overland from Maine to<br />
<strong>Greenville</strong> in 1840. A prominent<br />
resident for 50 years.<br />
corner where Masonic Temple now<br />
stands was an old two story frame<br />
house. It was the headquarters for<br />
every unlicensed saloon that was<br />
started. These unlicenseS saloons<br />
always ran until the grand jury met.<br />
In a hollow where Dixon's store<br />
now stands, there was a small<br />
frame house in which D. P. Hagee<br />
lived, and had a tailor shop. A<br />
blacksmith shop stood on the<br />
ground where the State Bank <strong>of</strong><br />
Hoiles a:id Sons is now. It was<br />
operated by a man by the name <strong>of</strong><br />
White. Next to the alley on the<br />
south side <strong>of</strong> the square was the<br />
frame building, which is still standing<br />
and is now known as the Miller<br />
building. In this bull ling lived<br />
Charles Hoiles, father <strong>of</strong> C. D.<br />
Hoiles, President <strong>of</strong> the State Bank,<br />
and <strong>of</strong> S. M. Hoiles, now deceased.<br />
In the corner room <strong>of</strong> this building<br />
Mr. Hoiles had started a store.<br />
Later on he moved to the site <strong>of</strong> the<br />
present Thomas House. There were<br />
no buildings from the alley west to<br />
the corner. On the corner was a<br />
small, one story building which was<br />
conspicuously labeled "Allen" but<br />
was vacant. On the corner where<br />
Hussong's store stood prior to the<br />
iire <strong>of</strong> Oct. 27, 1904, was the store<br />
<strong>of</strong> Morse and Brothers, a one story<br />
