Foldes, J. 1959. The actions of an extract of Cimicifuga racemosa. Ärztliche
Forschung. 13(12): 623-624.
Summarizes a series of experiments assessing the estrogenic effects of
black cohosh root (alcoholic extract Remifemin ® ). Various experiments
on ovariectomized rats showed estrogenic effects that included a dosedependent
induction of estrus within three days of treatment and increased
uterus weight in four days of treatment. However, one experiment showed
a lack of estrogenic effect with no histological changes in the ovaries of
rats after two weeks of treatment. Other research on the effects of black
cohosh on rats found no suppression of thyroid function, changes in
thyroid hormone mobilization, or sedative effect. A later experiment on
the sedative effects of black cohosh proved positive in 31 out of 41 pre-
and perimenopausal women. Three of the 41 women experienced gastric
symptoms as a result of the black cohosh treatment, but no other side effects
were observed. The author concluded that black cohosh was beneficial for
treating symptoms of pre- and perimenopause, with a sedative effect and a
hormone-like action.
the first year of this ongoing study.
