Ovariectomized rats were treated with either estradiol or black cohosh for
6 hours, 7 days, or 3 months. Estradiol stimulated the uterus, yet black
cohosh did not. Both estradiol and black cohosh prevented the development
of osteoporosis. Black cohosh also showed beneficial effects on hepatic and
lipid metabolism and on the central nervous system, which may account for
its ability to reduce hot flashes. The authors concluded that black cohosh
contains phyto-selective estrogen receptor modulators that have no effect on
the uterus but showed desirable effects on other organs.
