Pop was born in 1962 with the Beatles’ first single, ‘Love
me do’. In 2012, fifty years later, the Fête de la musique
celebrates this anniversary with some fantastic surprises. For
the thirty-first year, the summer solstice is being celebrated
with music. Paris and the surrounding towns vibrate with
songs as many and varied as there are different styles of
music. Every terrace hosts a singer and every crossroads a
stage; temporary dance floors appear on the streets and the
pavements bloom with bars and mini-canteens – it’s partytime!
Stars take turns to play huge concerts in the main
squares, while a flood of other free events take over cultural
venues, historical monuments, parks and gardens. Now you
just have to choose what to go to!

Solidays
22 TO 24 JUNE
PARIS 16 TH ARRONDISSEMENT
In its 14th year, this flagship festival for the Solidarité
Sida AIDS charity invites you to follow your musical and
charitable instinct. To this end, rock chic, electro choc and
world fusion music come back together at the Hippodrome
de Longchamp. The line-up includes The Kills, with their
only Paris date, and the crazy pumping DJs Birdy Nam Nam
and The Bloody Beetroots. And that’s not all – the festive
chaos also includes: Metronomy, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Orelsan,
Ayo, Selah Sue, Miles Kanes, Ben Howard and… surely there
can’t be more? Yes there can! Danakil, Tinariwen, Zebda,
Youssoupha, 1995, Charlie Winston, Garbage make their
return to the stage, Joey Starr, Amadou et Mariam, General
Elektriks and… watch this space! And, once again, there is a
real festival of musical and artistic discovery for children in
the Espace Kids.

Festival de Saint-Denis
& Métis

SAINT-DENIS
This festival is in its 44th year and remains a key event on
the music scene with a high-quality but down-to-earth
programme. Once again, enjoy symphonic concerts in the
Basilique Cathédrale de Saint-Denis, with Mozart's Requiem
to open the festival, and Berlioz's to bring it to an end. And
there are recitals covering composers from Bach to Vivaldi at
the Maison de La Légion d’Honneur. Other highlights include
the world music concerts in the Métis section of the festival,
which will continue to explore the countries around the
Mediterranean. Ibrahim Maalouf and Ciel d’Athènes will also
be performing in New York, broadcast free on a big outdoor
screen. And Femi Kuti and Arthur H will be giving a free
concert on the open-air stage on the Basilica forecourt on
21 June and 22 June respectively.
