a journey back in time
Journey back in time to the Middle Ages in the medieval town of Provins which
features on the UNESCO world heritage list with its tunnels, ramparts and fi fty-eight
historical monuments. And when you’ve seen all the sights of the period, take another
jump in time to the First World War, at the museum of the Great War in Meaux.

• SOUND AND LIGHT SHOW
8, 9, 15 and 16 June
For the thirty-fi rst year, come to the
gardens of the Cordelières convent at
nightfall to see a whole range of scenes
from medieval life.
• LES MÉDIÉVALES
DE PROVINS
23 and 24 June
For its 29 th year, this big medieval festival
is dedicated to the age of master builders.
Medieval scaffolding will be constructed
at the town’s fortifi ed gates, while master
craftsmen, stonemasons and rope
access technicians perform their work as
in yesteryear. Participate in workshops
and activities or watch the musicians and
street entertainers who bring back the
atmosphere of the Champagne fairs of
the 12 th and 13 th centuries. Try your hand
at quoits and skittles, and stroll round
craftsmen’s stalls in the camp at the foot
of the ramparts. On 23 June, there is a big
medieval concert at Place du Châtel.
• THE LIGHTS OF TIME
7 July and 4 August
When Provins lights up to thousands
of candles there are battle displays at
the Caesar’s Tower, a horse show at
the Porte Saint-Jean, music, costume
parades and more. It's quite a night!
• MEDIEVAL SHOWS
Until 4 November
Eagles, buzzards, falcons and vultures
star in this “The eagles of the ramparts”
falconry show. The “Legend of the
knights” equestrian show focuses on the
legends of Provins, and its princesses,
warriors and wolves. And the knights and
lords in “The Age of the ramparts” look
like they really have just returned from
the crusades!

WHAT TO VISIT
• MUSEUM OF THE GREAT WAR
This twenty-fi rst century museum which opened on
11 November 2011 has the only collection of its kind
in Europe and offers a new perspective on the First
World War. Innovative displays illustrate the war and
the huge social changes which resulted from it. It hosts
permanent and temporary exhibitions, cultural events
and a book and souvenir shop…
