a journey back <strong>in</strong> time<br />

Journey back <strong>in</strong> time to the Middle Ages <strong>in</strong> the medieval town of Prov<strong>in</strong>s which<br />

features on the UNESCO world heritage list with its tunnels, ramparts and fi fty-eight<br />

historical monuments. And when you’ve seen all the sights of the period, take another<br />

jump <strong>in</strong> time to the First World War, at the museum of the Great War <strong>in</strong> Meaux.<br />

For the thirty-fi rst year, come to the<br />

gar<strong>de</strong>ns of the Cor<strong>de</strong>lières convent at<br />

nightfall to see a whole range of scenes<br />

from medieval life.<br />

• LES MÉDIÉVALES<br />

DE PROVINS<br />

23 and 24 June<br />

For its 29 th year, this big medieval festival<br />

is <strong>de</strong>dicated to the age of master buil<strong>de</strong>rs.<br />

Medieval scaffold<strong>in</strong>g will be constructed<br />

at the town’s fortifi ed gates, while master<br />

craftsmen, stonemasons and rope<br />

access technicians perform their work as<br />

<strong>in</strong> yesteryear. Participate <strong>in</strong> workshops<br />

and activities or watch the musicians and<br />

street enterta<strong>in</strong>ers who br<strong>in</strong>g back the<br />

atmosphere of the Champagne fairs of<br />

the 12 th and 13 th centuries. Try your hand<br />

at quoits and skittles, and stroll round<br />

craftsmen’s stalls <strong>in</strong> the camp at the foot<br />

of the ramparts. On 23 June, there is a big<br />

medieval concert at Place du Châtel.<br />

• THE LIGHTS OF TIME<br />

7 July and 4 August<br />

When Prov<strong>in</strong>s lights up to thousands<br />

of candles there are battle displays at<br />

the Caesar’s Tower, a horse show at<br />

the Porte Sa<strong>in</strong>t-Jean, music, costume<br />

para<strong>de</strong>s and more. It's quite a night!<br />

• MEDIEVAL SHOWS<br />

Until 4 November<br />

Eagles, buzzards, falcons and vultures<br />

star <strong>in</strong> this “The eagles of the ramparts”<br />

falconry show. The “Legend of the<br />

knights” equestrian show focuses on the<br />

legends of Prov<strong>in</strong>s, and its pr<strong>in</strong>cesses,<br />

warriors and wolves. And the knights and<br />

lords <strong>in</strong> “The Age of the ramparts” look<br />

like they really have just returned from<br />

the crusa<strong>de</strong>s!<br />

This twenty-fi rst century museum which opened on<br />

11 November 2011 has the only collection of its k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>in</strong> Europe and offers a new perspective on the First<br />

World War. Innovative displays illustrate the war and<br />

the huge social changes which resulted from it. It hosts<br />

permanent and temporary exhibitions, cultural events<br />

and a book and souvenir shop…<br />
