The 2012 French Open Roland Garros 22 MAY TO 10 JUNE STADE ROLAND GARROS, PARIS 16 TH ARRONDISSEMENT In 2011 Na Li and Rafael Nadal took the women’s and men’s singles titles at the French Open, the second Grand Slam tournament after the Australian Open. Every spring the top tennis players in the world go head-to-head on the clay courts of Roland Garros, at the heart of Porte d’Auteuil. Which makes for a memorable day out in this historic stadium, whether or not you’re a tennis fan. Roland Garros is not just a sporting event, but a celebrity gathering point, and there’s plenty to be seen offcourt on the paths, in the stands and on restaurant and brasserie terraces around the venue. Metro station: Porte d’Auteuil. http://rolandgarros.fft-tickets.com Monumenta 2012 Daniel Buren « Excentrique(s) », travail in situ UNTIL 21 JUNE NAVE OF THE GRAND PALAIS, PARIS 8 TH ARRONDISSEMENT Since 2007, Monumenta has invited major international contemporary artists to take over the 13,500 m2 and 35m high Nave at the Grand Palais, with an all-new piece created especially for the location. For its fi fth year, Daniel Buren seemed the obvious choice. The artist has worked on transforming the most complex spaces and famous sites for fi fty years, like the Guggenheim Museum, New York and the Cour d’honneur of the Palais Royal, and the Grand Palais suits him down to the ground. Once again he works closely with outstanding architecture to shake our perceptions. Ave du Général-Eisenhower. Metro station: Champs-Elysées Clemenceau. Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 am - 7 pm. Thursday to Sunday, 10 am - midnight. www.monumenta.com Degas and the Nude UNTIL 1 JULY MUSÉE D’ORSAY, PARIS 7 TH ARRONDISSEMENT Following events in honour of Manet and Monet, this is the fi rst major exhibition dedicated to Edgar Degas in Paris since 1988. It epitomises the Musée d’Orsay’s desire to present advances in understanding the great masters of the second half of the 19th century. Some of the artist’s favourite themes, like dance or horse-racing have been dealt with extensively, but the same cannot be said for the nude. This recurring motif in Degas’ work is explored in paintings, prints, pastel works, photography and sculpture thanks to the extensive collections of the Musée d’Orsay, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts who is co-organising the exhibition and the exceptional works on loan from major collections. 1 Rue de la Légion d’Honneur.
