This mosque with a thirty-three metre high<br />
m<strong>in</strong>aret makes a lovely place to stop off. It<br />
is a place of worship, built <strong>in</strong> the Spanish-<br />
Moorish style, but it also gives visitors a<br />
warm welcome. Try m<strong>in</strong>t tea and oriental<br />
pastries on the patios of Café Maure, or<br />
couscous and home-ma<strong>de</strong> taj<strong>in</strong>es whilst<br />
admir<strong>in</strong>g the mosaics <strong>in</strong> the lounges. And<br />
why not round off your exotic experience by<br />
dropp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> at the hammam? It’s an oasis of<br />
tranquillity with its columns, founta<strong>in</strong>s and<br />

The Musée Galliera is be<strong>in</strong>g renovated, but<br />
is still pay<strong>in</strong>g an extramural tribute to the<br />
great master, Balenciaga. Featur<strong>in</strong>g whalebone<br />
bodices and ladies’ casaqu<strong>in</strong> gowns,<br />
sat<strong>in</strong> tailcoats, velvet bolero jackets, bustle<br />
dresses, embroi<strong>de</strong>ry and trimm<strong>in</strong>gs, the<br />
exhibition will unveil the collection of fashion<br />
items from the 18 th , 19 th and 20 th centuries<br />
carefully assembled by Balenciaga,<br />
displayed next to around forty of his haute<br />
couture dresses and coats. Accessories,<br />
photos and sketches enhance the exhibition<br />
and plunge visitors <strong>in</strong>to the creative<br />
<strong>in</strong>timacy of this ultimate of <strong>de</strong>signers.<br />

INSTITUT DU MONDE ARABE<br />
This year, the home of Arabic culture <strong>in</strong> <strong>Paris</strong> unveiled its new museum, which has been<br />
completely re<strong>de</strong>signed around art sourced from the twenty-two Arabic countries.<br />
It <strong>in</strong>clu<strong>de</strong>s acclaimed works of art, exhibitions centred on the Arab world’s cultural<br />
heritage and its contemporary creative scene, concerts and dance shows, activities for<br />
young people and much more. To mark the 50 th anniversary of Algeria’s <strong>in</strong><strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>nce,<br />
its music festival (8 to 16 June), will be stag<strong>in</strong>g a panorama of Algerian song,<br />
contemporary music, folklore and raï, a fusion of North African and Western music.<br />

This gar<strong>de</strong>n on the bank of the Se<strong>in</strong>e runs from the foot of the Institut du Mon<strong>de</strong> Arabe<br />
to the Jard<strong>in</strong> <strong>de</strong>s Plantes and is spr<strong>in</strong>kled with sculptures by Brancusi, César, Zadk<strong>in</strong>e<br />
and others besi<strong>de</strong>s. Wan<strong>de</strong>r around, play and picnic whilst admir<strong>in</strong>g Notre-Dame<br />
cathedral. Then, as night falls, dance the tango, salsa, or even rumba...<br />
