Around the JARDIN DES PLANTES, the Latin Quarter, offering a glimpse of Byzantium and a taste of the good life Here we have a garden created four centuries ago, with hundred-year-old trees, botanical treasures, a zoo, fossils and mammoths and the incredible Grande Galerie de l’Évolution. And what’s more, the story and adventures continue beyond the Jardin des Plantes itself. Discover steeply inclining streets and a mosque... Paris is full of surprises! JARDIN DES PLANTES, NATIONAL NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM This garden is a veritable treasure trove created under the reign of Louis XIII and contains beautiful buildings, clusters of trees and wide paths as well as eleven other areas, including a labyrinth, alpine and iris garden. Besides the Grande Galerie de l’Évolution and the Ménagerie, you’ll also fi nd the acclaimed Galeries de Paléontologie, the Grandes Serres glasshouses, which have been completely restored, play areas and other attractions. • LA MÉNAGERIE This zoo, opened in 1794, is a piece of architectural heritage in its own right, with its rotunda and large aviary built in 1802 and 1888 respectively, its Art Deco vivarium and monkey houses. Almost two thousand mammals, birds, turtles, crocodiles, snakes, amphibians and spiders live here, including Nénette, an orang-utan from Borneo, who has been in residence since 1972 and starred in a fi lm. But only in Xavier Desmier’s photographic work, which is being displayed outside. www.photoparnature.com Jardin des Plantes • GRANDE GALERIE DE L’ÉVOLUTION The huge glass roof here provides a spectacular setting for exhibiting the diversity of life on land and in the sea, the mechanisms of evolution and man’s role therein. Siam the elephant marches at the head of the caravan of stuffed animals, not far from Chinese tigers and Mauritian dodos, representing extinct or endangered species. Every day except Tuesdays, 10 am – 6 pm. +33 (0)1 40 79 54 79 • ALONG THE SPIDER’S THREAD (AU FIL DES ARAIGNÉES) Until 2 July This interactive exhibition sets out to dispel the myth of spiders as hairy monsters, revealing how amazing these eight-legged creatures really are, from their behaviour and abilities, to their useful role in the food chain. TAKE A BREAK • LA MOSQUÉE DE PARIS This mosque with a thirty-three metre high minaret makes a lovely place to stop off. It is a place of worship, built in the Spanish- Moorish style, but it also gives visitors a warm welcome. Try mint tea and oriental pastries on the patios of Café Maure, or couscous and home-made tajines whilst admiring the mosaics in the lounges. And why not round off your exotic experience by dropping in at the hammam? Every day, 9 am - midnight. +33 (0)1 45 35 97 33. www.la-mosquee.com EXHIBITION • THE WORLD OF CRISTOBAL BALENCIAGA Until 7 October The Musée Galliera is being renovated, but is still paying an extramural tribute to the great master, Balenciaga. Featuring whalebone bodices and ladies’ casaquin gowns, satin tailcoats, velvet bolero jackets, bustle dresses, embroidery and trimmings, the exhibition will unveil the collection of fashion items from the 18 th , 19 th and 20 th centuries carefully assembled by Balenciaga, displayed next to around forty of his haute couture dresses and coats. Accessories, photos and sketches enhance the exhibition and plunge visitors into the creative intimacy of this ultimate of designers. It includes acclaimed works of art, exhibitions centred on the Arab world’s cultural heritage and its contemporary creative scene, concerts and dance shows, activities for young people and much more. To mark the 50 th anniversary of Algeria’s independence, its music festival (8 to 16 June), will be staging a panorama of Algerian song, contemporary music, folklore and raï, a fusion of North African and Western music. • ZYRIAB BY NOURA Still hungry for new sensations?
