The heart of <strong>Paris</strong> is a <strong>de</strong>lightful mixture of old stone and contemporary<br />

architecture, narrow alleyways and wi<strong>de</strong> open spaces close to the Se<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

It is home to a won<strong>de</strong>rful blend of classical art and urban culture, which<br />

can be broken up by shopp<strong>in</strong>g breaks or time out to enjoy gourmet food.<br />

THE GAÎTÉ LYRIQUE<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce 2011, digital culture has been<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g its mark at the Gaîté lyrique<br />

through an eclectic programme. In<br />

Play Along, you will fi nd yourself <strong>in</strong> a<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g transformed <strong>in</strong>to a life-sized<br />

playground. Your mission? To explore<br />

new ways to play <strong>in</strong> the 21st century,<br />

with the aid of giant board games,<br />

construction games... and vi<strong>de</strong>o<br />

games, of course! Play Along is no rigid<br />

nostalgic exhibition: <strong>in</strong>stead, it relies on<br />

the <strong>in</strong>terplay between the <strong>in</strong>teractive<br />

and the theatrical, with a series of<br />

performances and sneak previews to<br />

crown it off.<br />

POMPIDOU CENTRE<br />

This colourful and futuristic cruise l<strong>in</strong>er<br />

has been sail<strong>in</strong>g the seas of culture and<br />

mo<strong>de</strong>rn and contemporary art s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

1977. On board, you will fi nd the Musée<br />

National d’Art Mo<strong>de</strong>rne, theatres, a<br />

bookshop, a <strong>de</strong>signer boutique and a<br />

rich exhibition programme.<br />

• MATISSE. PAIRS AND SETS<br />

Until 18 June<br />

This retrospective exhibition sheds light<br />

on one of the most peculiar aspects<br />

of Henri Matisse’s work, the repetition<br />

of the same subject or motif, through<br />

a selection of his masterpieces. These<br />

sixty pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs, assembled together <strong>in</strong><br />

some cases for the fi rst time s<strong>in</strong>ce the<br />

era <strong>in</strong> which they were created, br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

together different k<strong>in</strong>ds of fram<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

outl<strong>in</strong>e, brushstroke and colour. All<br />

the ma<strong>in</strong> periods are represented,<br />

from the po<strong>in</strong>tillist method featur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

Luxe, Calme et Volupté <strong>in</strong> 1904 to the<br />

découpage of the 1950s. The artist’s<br />

work is thus on display <strong>in</strong> its entirety,<br />

complete with his self-prob<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

break<strong>in</strong>g-offs, turnarounds and<br />

achievements.<br />

This artist will be tak<strong>in</strong>g over the<br />

Pompidou Centre: a whole four<br />

months to discover half a century of<br />

contemporary pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g!<br />

This exhibition, featur<strong>in</strong>g four fi lms (moments captured<br />

<strong>in</strong> Berl<strong>in</strong>, Bor<strong>de</strong>aux, Mexico City and Sarajevo) on a loop<br />

accompanied by an amaz<strong>in</strong>g soundtrack, along with<br />

sculptures, artefacts and photographs will transport<br />

you <strong>in</strong>to a kaleidoscopic universe. Anri Sala’s work<br />

blends together images, sounds and architecture. This<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallation is a presentation of all three, <strong>in</strong> keep<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

the Centre Pompidou’s approach of showcas<strong>in</strong>g artists<br />

at the forefront of the French scene.<br />

• LE GEORGES<br />

On the 6th and uppermost fl oor, Le Georges<br />

restaurant, with its avant-gar<strong>de</strong> décor, serves<br />

extraord<strong>in</strong>ary cocktails as well as an <strong>in</strong>ventive cuis<strong>in</strong>e<br />

with a talent for re<strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g classic dishes. It also<br />

boasts one of the most spectacular terraces <strong>in</strong> <strong>Paris</strong><br />

with a breathtak<strong>in</strong>g view.<br />
