When Catherine was about 17 she was sent to England for three to learn English and to
be trained as a hotel secretary. On her return she acted in this capacity at the
Tellsplatte Hotel until she left for New York. The Tell’s Chapel was renovated about
this time; Cathy participated and became acquainted with Ernst Stückelberg who
painted the frescos in the Chapel. Among the family memorabilia includes 50 small
photographs, by professional photographers, that were given her by guests, most of
them from foreign countries. Some bear the dates 1875 and 1876. They are well preserved
and are interesting because of the variety of people,
their attire, etc.
Tells Chapel {Tell plate}
Between the towns of Sisikon and Flüelen and directly on the
shores of Lake Lucerne lies the chapel dedicated to the
legend of Wilhelm Tell.
A chapel was built in 1388 to commemorate the spot where
William Tell leaped from Bailiff Gessler‘s boat . First
mentioning of the chapel was in the "Swiss Chronicle"
Brennwalds Henry (1508-16).
A festival was founded in 1561 and is held every year since on
the Friday following the Ascension Day. The
pilgrimage is by boats to the Tell Chapel.
In 1589/90 the chapel expanded or was newly
built. 1599, the altars dedicated to St. Sebastian,
Wilhelm, the Trinity, Mary and all the saints was
consecrated.
The present chapel was constructed in 1879, and
by 1882 the four Tell frescoes painted by the
Basel historical painter Ernst Stückelberg (1831-
1903) were completed. The frescoes depict
the Rutli, the Apple Shot, the Jump from
the boat and Gessler‘s death in the caves.
The Chapel has been incorperated into the
city symbol of Sisikon.
