The "Old Confederation", was a loose structure of various countries and city-states in the area
of modern Switzerland. In 1291 envoys from the three forest sites (Cantons) of Uri, Schwyz
and Unterwalden convened at the Rutli, a remote field across the lake from Sisikon. They
made a vow, to stay together and protect the other, that day an alliance was sealed. They
then justified and won a broad autonomy from the Holy Roman Empire. This alliance is popularly
known as the founding of the Swiss Confederation.
Uri being one of the three founding Canton is one of the oldest in
Switzerland. The Imhof crest dates to 1290 in Uri making them one
of the oldest families names in Canton Uri and Switzerland.
