When, in 1888 it became necessary to be licensed by the Canton to act as a guide, Michael
Gasser and Albin Infanger obtained licenses as local guides for Isenthal and the
surrounding area and Josef Maria Baumann from Geisswang Seelisberg was licensed to
guide up to Mount Uri-Rotstock via Hangbaum. Two
other applicants were refused licenses because they were
too young. Johann Gasser, landlord of the restaurant
'Zum Tourist' also became licensed as a local guide. On
April 21, 1894 Jost and Josef Aschwanden from Isenthal
were registered as local guides, followed by Karl
Aschwanden. Demand for these (guide) services ceased
with the beginning of The First World War and it was
decades before Alois Infanger, the founder and current
Director of the Mountain Climbing School "Montanara" reestablished
the mountain guide business in Isenthal.
