Rev. John Infanger, Jr. Methodist Pastor
SOMERVILLE - The Rev. John M. Infanger Jr., 81, died May 14, 2004 at the Union home of a
daughter, Lois E.
He was born in Jersey City and had lived in Chatham Township since 1985.
A Methodist minister and sought-after dinner speaker, Rev. Infanger was pastor of First United
Methodist Church on West High Street from 1967-77. He continued giving sermons, blessing weddings
and officiating at funerals after his retirement in 1985 as pastor of the New Providence United Methodist
Church.
He earlier was the pastor of Grace United Methodist Church in Dover from 1949-54, the Cedar Cliff
United Methodist Church in Haledon from 1954-62 and the Rutherford United Methodist Church from
1962-67.
Rev. Infanger earned a Master of Sacred Theology degree from Drew University in 1952. He received a
bachelor's degree from Drew in 1944 and a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Drew in 1947.
He was a member of Rotary clubs in Dover, Haledon, Rutherford and Somerville.
Also surviving are his wife, Frances VanArsdale Infanger; two sons, Daniel J. of Green Brook and Peter
D. of Dalton, Ga.; another daughter, Leah & Lois A. of Chatham Township; and four grandchildren.
Services were held Monday at New Providence United Methodist Church. Burial was private.
Arrangements were by Growney Funeral Home in Hillside. Memorial donations may be sent to New
Providence United Methodist Church, 1441 Springfield Ave., New Providence, NJ 07974 or the
Chatham Township Emergency Squad.
