Chapter—1 Bern Simmenthal Valley I N F A N G E R H I S T O R Y Isenthal Page 2 INFANGER (of BIFANG, of IFANG, BIFFANGER, IF- FANGER). The Infanger family lived in the Simmental Valley in the Canton of Bern. It is believed that they were from Bifang which is located in the village of St. Stephens, Obersimmenthal area, just south of Bern. The area includes many mountains, the highest of which is the Wildstrubel. Somewhat below the Wildstrubel, by the Siebenbrunnen ("seven fountains") comes the Simme River, which gives Simmental ("Simme Valley") its name. In 1529 the area experienced the Protestant Reformation. The Infangers being Catholic left and went to live in the Canton of Uri which was predominantly Catholic. There are two groups of Infangers one from the Lake Lucerne area and the other from Engelberg. It is possible that as the Infangers left Bern and migrated east that some families settled in Engelberg while the others continued to Sisikon. The lines developed separately from eachother and it is not known if the family connection maintained. They each developed different family crests. Today most don’t know how or if they are related. The Infanger Family of the Canton Uri, were citizens of Sisikon, Isenthal, Bauen and Flüelen. The first to obtained the right of Uri citizenship in 1500 was Heini of Bifang. One record states that Konrad Infanger from Sisikon appear as a witness, Fünfzehner - Richard and benefactor of churches 1549-1586; honorary envoy to the Aurritt of Ladvogts Apro to Baden 1557.
