<strong>of</strong>f at a pier and then proceed to Castle Garden where the steerage passengers disembarked.<br />
All immigrants had to land at the depot, which was closed to every one else, like the<br />
scam artists and thieves. Each immigrant had his name checked against the ship manifest, underwent<br />
a brief medical exam, passed through customs, and had his name registered as having<br />
entered the country.<br />
