The Name First mentioned the name <strong>of</strong> this valley since 1280 as "Yseltal". Since 1483, one finds the place name Isenthal, from the Old, Roman word "Insela" (island or peninsula, the valley behind the island) should be inferred. Other traditions that the place name comes from the Isenthal in Limestone occurring earlier and gained Bohnerz iron, in the vernacular "Isen". In other words, the valley where the "Isen, the iron was found. The Crest Before the year 1901 inhabitants could only reach Isenthal on the land by a country road from Seedorf, Baden and Isleten, or Nidwalden by foot. The first inhabitants had to used a ladder to overcome the precipitous rocky cliffs which rise about the Urnersee. It was only in 1951 that a paved road was constructed so that vehicles could enter the village for the first time.
